1994 Explorer Sport 195k. When it gets hot outside, like over 85⁰ I get this smell that smells like turpentine or old gasoline. It did this last year and it's doing it again. There is no old gas in this vehicle as I run $50 a day in gas through it. The vehicle runs fine, it's just that smell. Has anyone else experienced this? More of a curiosity than anything else.

85º considered hot?
If the smell is coming from the front, would assume it is the charcoal canister, drivers side in engine bay.

Well, in Portland, Oregon 85⁰ is considered hot. Like I said, the vehicle runs fine. That smell reminds me of hanging out with grandpa when I was a kid. He used turpentine for everything. I'll check out the canister (maybe). Had to replace my severely plugged radiator today.

Might want to check the vapor purge solenoid too. Be a bit gentle with it. There are other posts on this forum regarding the issue. Here's one : strong sour gas smell
Welcome to ExplorerForum btw!
You used superscript zero as degree sign? Portland is weird. alt+167 forever.

havent experienced the smell before. tjat being said id suspect something evap related since its temp related. unless ya got some turpentine air frwshener little tree hangin off ya mirror 😂 does it happen after ya shut it off runnin any correlation with that or just temp?

When you unscrew gas cap is there a hiss indicating system pressure???? If not, there is a gizmo under the upper intake that may need attention. It may be called purge solenoid-not sure. Good luck!

Like has been said above, the vapors are coming through the charcoal canister. The charcoal is too old and saturated to absorb the smell anymore. You can buy a new one or rebuild one like this : Replacing the charcoal in a vapor canister

Ive rebuilt two of them using the post I linked with great results and haven't smelled the gas fumes since doing that.
