Smoking the Tires

My ex-step dad (weird, huh?) has a 99 dodge ram and yesterday he powerbraked it. I wasn't there but he told me that he left around 100 feet of rubber. I want to try with my explorer but I'm afraid of tearing something up. Will it really hurt anything besides the tires??

I don't think you'll be able to get 100 ft of rubber, or 10 ft for that matter. A burn out on an Explorer is very though, unless you do it on ice or in reverse, LOL. I've done it once around a corner. I'm no expert but it can't be good for the brakes.

Also, watch out for that tranny, it could go!

I've left rubber in reverse, but only about 15 ft, not 100

Mine spins tires like crazy in reverse and doesn't let up, but in drive (with stock size tires put on) I can only spin them for about 3 feet or so .

I don't powerbrake, couldn't be good for anything.

This is probably a dumb question, but what exactly is powerbraking?

It's when you hold the brakes down and push the gas at the same time.

Oh, OK, I didn't know that that was called powerbraking. I thought that was just called doing a burnout. Nevermind, I've never powerbraked in the Explorer. I've left rubber by just flooring it in reverse from a stop. I also regularly spin the tires at traffic lights on wet roads, but that doesn't leave rubber

THIS might be a dumb question...... why would you want to? In all honesty, a burnout has everything to do with horsepressure and little to do with brakes.

A brakestand WILL hurt your transmission and rear brakes.......

If you do this in front of your friends and things go bad, it seems to establish your rightful position in the food chain.....

I keep getting the feeling I'm an old guy that stumbled into a mosh.

my reverse gear is screwed up, so i dont do anything crazy in reverse. But apparently when i had stock tires I got some smoke to come from them when i gunned it on a sharp turn and the rear tire smoked. This was at a grocery store lot when it was jam packed. It also squealed a little bit. Man that was just crazy.

I can say with a 4.56 gear ratio and 33" boggers on black asphalt, I can leave a very lengthy piar of tire marks. I know alot of my friends try and try to beat me but its just how you play with the throttle. Alot of people feel or hear the tire let loose and just punch it and leave your foot on the floor. Me, I keep the RPMs above 3K and the tires keep spinning. I have not tried this with my 35s. They cost alot more then 33s. Although I do have a pic of me tryin to climb a very wet rock hill in 2wd and spinning the tires with my 35s on.

Ok....so everyone on here can smoke the tires w/o powerbraking. That is everyone except me . I've tried to just floor it but it just starts out a little quicker. I'm not sure what my gears are (just stock). Maybe I can do it with better exhaust (which should come soon...I hope!). Keep the replies coming!! I love to hear about others burning rubber.

"Brake Torques" (Powerbraking) flats out puts excessive wear on the tranny, engine (especially in the red), driveshaft, rear diff., axle shafts and the tires. I have been a truck with a friend of mine, and he had a 300HP+ '86 1500. He blew the trans and driveshaft after 75ft. I laughed my ass off until I had tears coming down my cheeks. He had the "Mom I didn't take the last cookie look" on his face.

Put a little bleach under your tire and floor it. You get a better burnout and a lot of smoke that way. My exploder lays down a lot of rubber when i do that.

Um..I think you've got it turned arund...the 4.10 does burnouts a heck of a lot better then a 3.27. The higher the number (in size) the better burnout (to a point)

Curtis the reason you don't burn out is because your auto 4x4 kicks in. You could easily burn out otherwise.

i can do it on the up ramp in my parking ramp. or right after a car wash when theres been soap on the tires. otherwise under good traction conditions they only spin for about one revolution before it goes.
a while ago there was an ad for a jeep grand cherokee unlimited that had a really cool picture of it smoking all four tires. i don't know if any of you saw that, but it was tight as hell.
sometime i think i will try the bleach thing, or put tire gel on my treads and do a huge four wheel burnout just to take a picture and say that i did.

imo though theres nothing dumber than when people spin their tires in wimpy vehicles just 'cause they have no traction and they want to look cool in front of their friends. as a general rule-keep the tire spinning for racing and muddin'
