I was torquing down a bolt on my Idle Air Control Valve after I cleaned it. The Ford manual said to crank it to 86lb ft, which seemed way high to me but it was in print.

To make a long story short the bolt snapped halfway into the plastic/brass sleave that it mounts into. It does not seem to affect the idle performance but I can see where the one side is not as tighly fitted as the other.

Is there any method or tool I can use to get the old bolt shaft out of the hole so I can install a new one??

Would this work?

http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&pid=00952155000

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ive used those on brake bolts they should be able to work with your application. Just make sure it aint to big.

Proper spec is 44 LB/IN, not 86 LB/FT

Muthaf***er, why the hell was my manual inncorrect. I knew 89lb was way to high :fire:

Thanks Spindle & 97

Sometimes if it doesn't seem right, it might be a good idea to double check in another manual if you have one. Just out of curiosity, which book is it? I've used those tools before. You have to drill very slowly so that you don't snap it off inside when it finally grabs. This is an early warning for you, so you don't get into any trouble while you are doing that repair.

The other thing that is odd about the Aldata info is: 10nm is 89 LB-in. not lb-ft

I lost the bolt I snapped so I can't match it. I know the hex nut on the head was 5/16 anyone know what size bolt this is, where it can be bought or even what size I should look for?

Thanks this truly sucks as I believe air is leaking in.

Take the other one out and measure it.

Gotta love ya Al :D
Lazz, is an 8mm metric bolt, fine thread, go to the bolt store and buy several
8mm is the socket size, bolt size at the threads is 2.5 mm, most likely an M3

They have different grades (hardness levels) of bolts. Get the highest one they have. The strong ones are either grade 5, or grade 8. Use a little antiseize compound on them to make them easy to remove just in case you ever have to remove them again. I've used this on those bolts, the tps bolts, and the gasket on the new solenoid.

Is no need to use a grade 8 bolt on a IAC, is total overkill, any proper size bolt will work.
