Snow

I've heard of 18,000km on a Nissan Patrol to 75,000km and still going on a Toureg.

You might not get them in the US.

Similar to but better in the wet to a Bridgestone H/T.

The Dunlop Grandtrek AT20 is listed on Tirerack, it's a much more highway oriented tyre that would still be good on sand but not so much on snow.

It has a UTQG rating of 500 but I don't know how much stock to put in that.

I've heard of people complaining about treadlife of their Pirelli Scorpions have a UTQG of 640 - 740 then I've heard of people praising the tread life of Atturos with a UTQG of 240.

My parent's 06 4Runner came stock with those Dunlop Grandtrek AT20.

Asides from offroading (parent's don't do that), they were pretty much a mediocre at everything tire. The ratings on TireRack reflect that, http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Dunlop&tireModel=Grandtrek+AT20

Parent's replaced them with Michelin LTX M/S2. Even my Mom in her late 70's complimented how much better the Michelins are.

Yeah, Michelins are better than most tyres.

I've heard the AT20s aren't very good.

With functioning 4x4, ABS, and good tires---it's great.

I drove mine through a snowstorm last year with rear tires that had worn tread---what a mistake.

Thanks for the information everybody. I'm excited to see how well mine will do if it ever snows here.

You should be able to find out this weekend, if not sooner. Weather guy says it's gonna snow! :)

Whoohoo, I can't wait to use my Michelin's :D Last year after the snow, I was the only one that made it to work in the morning.

I have the KO2s, and they are great in the snow. They are definitely better than the original KOs.

Avoid the Scorpions. I have those on a newer Explorer at work and they are completely useless in snow. Just get out and walk.

How are the KO2s with noise? I am thinking about going with them.
I know the fact that they are fairly aggressive and are going to have some noise. But right now i have the rugged terrains and they are cupped really bad and way noisy.

Yes I have had both my Explorers out on the roads, but I really want to drive out through the bean fields and punch it!

They are definitely more noisy than the KOs, but not enough to be bothersome. They are a lot heavier than the KOs too. Stiff sidewalls.

well, I misread something, posted something dumb and there's no option to delete post :)

What do Australians think of seeing the word "tire?"

I had Goodyear wrangler territory tires, load range E, 80psi ( only use 50psi)
on my Sport..

I may have to revise my opinion of Goodyears.
One of the reasons I didn't like them is that they had soft, squishy sidewalls and couldn't take much pressure and putting more pressure in didn't help.

Doh, I edited my post after you responded.

The Wrangler Territory tires belt shifted, went wonky, rode hard and were noisy.
On the plus side they were good in mud/snow. Not so hot on the road or on ice.

That's basically the extent of my use of Goodyears for recent memory though so, other than that particular tire, I wouldn't read much into it.

I have zero experience with Goodyears of that type of construction, only the floatation type that's good on sand.

Mt Touareg has some sort of Goodyears on it, very highway oriented with a word on the sidewall somewhere that makes me think "green."

Maybe "verde" or something.

They seemed to be ok for the about 2 hours of city driving in heavy rain and about 20 minutes of highway before i blew a turbo.

We know that as Americans English isn't your first language so we let it go.

LOL.. Love it :D

But..

How do you spell "Fire?"

I'm Canadian.. but I guess that makes me "North American"

sigh, that makes me American in some form. I probably just threw gas on some sort of fire.
