So my 4wd stopped working one day about a year and a half ago... Well when I finnally got it fixed last week(money issues) Heres what we found,
I guess the casing got cracked, let the oil out and water in, got hot, melted and this is what happened, then it completly seized(the little red lines point to cracks):

Notice the lack of a pinion...

Time for new gears and a housing.

Wow! What a mess. Looks like something brought up from the Titanic.

That is the exact reason people should open up any axle they want to buy.... :banghead:

I think it happend when I hit a big rock because it bent my radius arm supports and my crossmember too, so I hit it pretty hard.

That would probably do it.
How much did that cost to fix it?

Well...
When I got it fixed I got a bunch of other stuff added too... for $968 I got:
Labor(inlcuding fluids and stuff, 2 1/2 hours)
new front diff
warn manual hubs
new front brake pads
new right axle shaft
rear driveline
remount rear shock mounts
u-bolts...
So I dunno what it was seperately.

That doesn't sound like too bad of a price.
Did you get it done at a local place?

Yes, they do great work too...I have had them do a few things for me.
