i got a 99 withthe sohc engine, when i start up the car the engine revs up and makes a loud rattling sound, then it comes back down to idle speed and just makes a ticking sound. It also starts rattling at about 2400 rpm it sounds like it might still be making the noise at higher engine speeds but it is hard to hear over the regular engine noises and tire noise. Anyone know what could be causing this? Is it serious? Also i have been having trouble tryin to get my car started when its cold. I would turn the key and the engine would start then die immediatly after i returnthe key to the on position. It continues to die after repeated attempts unless i step on the gas pedal and give it some gas. then it will start up fine so long as i rev the engine a little bit. As of yesterday i tried starting my X up and it would just die like before. i tired giving it a little gas to start er up but this time the engine died as soon as i took my foot off the gas pedal. I tried starting it a few times using the same method as before but the engine kept dyin as my foot came off the gas. i then started the car up by givin it some gas and reved the engine a few times and then tried to maintain idle speed by giving it a little gas....did this for bout 5 mins then i took my foot of the gas andthe engine died. I really wanted to get my car started cause my jetski was on the trailer onthe back and i was really lookin forward to a day of jetskin. so being desperate i put the car in nuetral and started it up and kept my foot on the gas as i shifted into drive and then drove off. after about 1 min of driving down my street i took my foot of the gas and the engine stayed running. i took the car down to the boat ramp and left it there over night. this morning i went to go pick up my car and it started just fine. IM not sure if these two problems are related but they both are annoying...any help would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like both the lower intake manifold o-rings and either camshaft tensioners or guide. The o-rings and tensioners are covered under an extended warranty (6yr/72K). They are covered uner Owner Notification Program 00M12. The camshaft guides are also covered under an extended warranty (7yr/100K). The program that covers it is 01M01. Both will be repaired at no charge to you as long as you are withing the mileage limits. Do a search on this site for 00M12 and 01M01.

my 98 sport sohc had the same problems. i took it in to ford cause i figured it was under warranty, and sure enough, it was the warranty stuff that robert mentioned - fixed it in one day for free. take it in for warranty work.

What exactly are the symptoms of the 01M01 recall??

The official Ford letter says the symptom is a metallic sound that can be heard at all speeds but is more pronounced when sitting at an idle.

The Rattling Noise

My buddy just took his in for the same problem. It's warranty work pertaining to the exhaust, right about the catz.

its a tensioner belt, my dad had the same problem on his 98 sohc. take it to ford and they will fix it for free. there was a service bulliten on that
