I was curious if an older(97-01?, the ones with the bad timing chain) SOHC 4.0 would be able to be replaced with a newer one, say from a newer ex, ranger or even a stang. I dont need to do it now, or hopefully ever. I was just curious if me, or anyone ever had to go to a junkyard for a new motor if one of the newer ones would be a direct fit.

I don't believe the Ranger or Stang has that engine. You could replace with a newer Explorer engine, The SOHC is still standard in the 09 Explorer's, so they've been around a while. I don't see why it would not fit.

You will want to keep your existing emissions equipment and accessories...which means you may have to swap intakes, etc. But the long blocks should interchange just fine. But to be sure, I would contact a salvage yard and have them check their Hollander.

bringing thread back from the dead...need to know if a 2004 explorer motor will work in my 2001 Sport
