SOHC tensioners: warranty program

I can buy the maintenance manual on cd-rom for $1200. Sounds like a deal eh?

I think I'll get the Chiltons verson for the '00.

My cam tensioners have already been replaced once. That was a month after I bought it. I don't know why, but when I got it back from repairing the drivers window motor the service receipt said that they replaced the cam tensioner.

Maybe someone will know about this sound. I get a slight rattling at 2500rpm cold or hot. Sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesn't. Should I be worried about it? My ranger's 3.0 had the same noise and the dealer told me it was the injectors and can't be fixed. Any possible relation?

Mine make the same slight rattle at about 2000 rpm. I am not sure what it is though. Usually only occurs on let up from acceleration.

My '98 Explorer XLT SOHC is at the Ford dealer with the intake gasket leak problem. Engine idles terribly, especially when cold, dealer says codes indicate engine running lean, suggesting intake manifold leak. I mentioned the extended warranty (#00M12) but was told the intake manifold leak is only covered while they are in there performing the cam tensioner fix (which I don't seem to have that problem). I have not received any notification from Ford on this warranty program so I really can't argue the point. Has anyone actually seen this notification to see just what is covered? I've usually had good luck getting service at this dealer but have a sneaking suspicion I'm getting the royal screw-job on this one.

When I spoke with Simone at the Ford Owner's Hotline, she said the Owner Notification Program was for either problem. The letter said that if either problem needed repair, the other items was to be replaced as well. I would start with them and explain your situation. Your dealer should be able to show you what he has on 00M12 so I would ask to see his paperwork and how he came to his conclusion. The Ford number is 800-392-3673.

Robert - You da man!! I tried the dealer again with no luck, actually got a bunch of attitude from the "service advisor". I then contacted the Ford Hotline and she read the bulletin to me and it said "either" problem, not "both". They got with the dealer, just checked my voicemail and I'm covered. Saved me $400. Guess I owe you a beer. The Hotline also mentioned the throttle body bulletin which I hadn't heard of. Can't wait to see what my "service advisor" has to say when I pick up my truck.

Is there a way to see/read these notices online?

Wouldn't that be $400 in beer? Glad I could help, next time you get to Arizona you can pay me the beer. The throttle body bulletin was the Owner Notification Program that was issued before the tensioners and o-ring program. It was 00M11. It extended the warranty on the throttle body to 7 years 100K miles due to the throttle sticking closed. It was listed in its entirety at NHTSA but it disappeared between last week and this week.

I posted my correspondence w/ ford, which matches what robert's telling you...

& nope, it does not appear to be viewable directly via the 'net...

hope it helps

You know the strange thing is when this first made news, I checked the NHTSA site and it listed the Owner Notification Program 00M11 for the throttle body in its entirety. This week though it is not available anymore. I kept checking it hoping that the 00M12 would get posted there, but probably not now that the previous one disappeared.

is a ford dealer the only one who can do the chain tensioner and o ring thing? also what should i expect to say as i am well past the 50k im sitting on about 127k. im pretty sure this is my problem hard start when cold. the rattling is pretty bad sounds like a diesel sometimes. what should i expect to pay?

To answer the question about why the manifold isn't separate, this was what I found:

ATTACHMENT IV
Owner Notification Program 00M12

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Owner Notification Program 00M12 Question and Answer Sheet

Q1:
How do I know if a customer's vehicle requires a new camshaft chain tensioner or an intake manifold gasket?

ANSWER:
TENSIONER: An engine rattling noise that occurs just after cold engine start up and goes away within a few minutes after the engine is running indicates the need to install a new camshaft chain tensioner.
INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET: Rough idle and low idle are symptoms which may, in some cases, indicate an intake manifold leak.

Q2:
Can either the camshaft chain tensioner or the lower intake manifold gasket cause an engine failure?

ANSWER:
No. Neither of these components will cause engine failure. Therefore, engine replacement is not approved under this program.

Q3:
Has any provision been made for diagnostic time?

ANSWER:
No. The only diagnosis involved is to determine if the camshaft timing chain "rattle" is only during cold start up or if the engine has symptoms which may indicate an intake manifold leak as described in question #1.

Q4:
Do you anticipate any "Related Damage"?

ANSWER:
We do not expect any "Related Damage" claims because the affected parts have no damaging effect on other parts. Also, if the Technical Instructions (Attachment III) are followed, damage to other parts during the repair should be rare. In those rare cases if related damage occurred, if would be identified at the same time as the repair.

Q5:
Why has replacement of the lower intake manifold gasket been included with the replacement of the camshaft chain tensioner?

ANSWER:
First of all, both conditions basically affect the same volume of vehicles and the steps required to perform the repair are very similar. Secondly, typical intake manifold gasket leaks are masked by engine electronic adaptive strategies and, if the repair were not performed along with the camshaft chain tensioner, all of the customers would not receive the benefits of the new gasket.

Q6:
Are the service procedures for the camshaft chain tensioner and intake manifold gasket the same as the Workshop Service procedures?

ANSWER:
No. For example: The Technical Instructions for this program do not require draining the cooling system. Also, to prevent related damage and dealer comebacks, specific instructions are provided for the removal of the oil galley pipe plug. Therefore, it is important that the Technical Instructions for this program be carefully followed.

Q7:
When I'm replacing the camshaft chain tensioner, how much more work is involved to replace the lower intake manifold gasket?

ANSWER:
When replacing the camshaft chain tensioner, the upper intake manifold must be removed. To replace the lower intake manifold gasket, the only additional steps are to remove the lower intake manifold bolts and replace the gasket.

Q8:
Why is the labor allowance only 1.8 hours when camshaft chain tensioner replacement in TSB 99-26-05 pays 1.6 hours and lower intake manifold gasket replacement pays 1.5 hours? Why don't I get paid 3.1 hours?

ANSWER:
As mentioned in question #7, the only additional steps to replace the lower intake manifold gasket are to remove the manifold bolts and replace the gasket. This represents only 8 of the 50 steps required for this combined repair.

Also, keep in mind that without this program, most vehicles would not come in for both of these repairs. Therefore, the combined repair is in the best interest of the customer.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They can only charge 1.8 hrs of labor for the job.... that should equate to less than $300 for the whole job, right?

The revised warranty on the orings and tensioner is 72K

Yes only ford can do the WARRANTY work.

Since you are out of warranty anyone could do it. Expect to pay $350 for the oring/tensioner change. The rattling is most likely the rear cassette(cam gears and chain w/tensioner), that will set you back about $2000 since the motor has to be pulled for that repair.
