Q1:
How do I know if a customer's vehicle requires a new camshaft chain tensioner or an intake manifold gasket?
ANSWER:
TENSIONER: An engine rattling noise that occurs just after cold engine start up and goes away within a few minutes after the engine is running indicates the need to install a new camshaft chain tensioner.
INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKET: Rough idle and low idle are symptoms which may, in some cases, indicate an intake manifold leak.
Q2:
Can either the camshaft chain tensioner or the lower intake manifold gasket cause an engine failure?
ANSWER:
No. Neither of these components will cause engine failure. Therefore, engine replacement is not approved under this program.
Q3:
Has any provision been made for diagnostic time?
ANSWER:
No. The only diagnosis involved is to determine if the camshaft timing chain "rattle" is only during cold start up or if the engine has symptoms which may indicate an intake manifold leak as described in question #1.
Q4:
Do you anticipate any "Related Damage"?
ANSWER:
We do not expect any "Related Damage" claims because the affected parts have no damaging effect on other parts. Also, if the Technical Instructions (Attachment III) are followed, damage to other parts during the repair should be rare. In those rare cases if related damage occurred, if would be identified at the same time as the repair.
<b>Q5:
Why has replacement of the lower intake manifold gasket been included with the replacement of the camshaft chain tensioner?
ANSWER:
First of all, both conditions basically affect the same volume of vehicles and the steps required to perform the repair are very similar. Secondly, typical intake manifold gasket leaks are masked by engine electronic adaptive strategies and, if the repair were not performed along with the camshaft chain tensioner, all of the customers would not receive the benefits of the new gasket. </b>
Q6:
Are the service procedures for the camshaft chain tensioner and intake manifold gasket the same as the Workshop Service procedures?
ANSWER:
No. For example: The Technical Instructions for this program do not require draining the cooling system. Also, to prevent related damage and dealer comebacks, specific instructions are provided for the removal of the oil galley pipe plug. Therefore, it is important that the Technical Instructions for this program be carefully followed.
Q7:
When I'm replacing the camshaft chain tensioner, how much more work is involved to replace the lower intake manifold gasket?
ANSWER:
When replacing the camshaft chain tensioner, the upper intake manifold must be removed. To replace the lower intake manifold gasket, the only additional steps are to remove the lower intake manifold bolts and replace the gasket.
Q8:
Why is the labor allowance only 1.8 hours when camshaft chain tensioner replacement in TSB 99-26-05 pays 1.6 hours and lower intake manifold gasket replacement pays 1.5 hours? Why don't I get paid 3.1 hours?
ANSWER:
As mentioned in question #7, the only additional steps to replace the lower intake manifold gasket are to remove the manifold bolts and replace the gasket. This represents only 8 of the 50 steps required for this combined repair.
Also, keep in mind that without this program, most vehicles would not come in for both of these repairs. Therefore, the combined repair is in the best interest of the customer.
