What do you guys think would be involved in putting a solid axle in old 98??? I know this is a lot different then doing it in the early model.. give me so tips so I can find shops and whatnot.

Biggest difference that comes to mind is that you don't have a steering box mounted to the frame. I don't think the frame rails in the front have as much of an arch to them as they do in the earlier models either. A good shop could do an excellent conversion for you though and it would be the best mod for off-roading that you could do to your late model!

Sorry I don't have the name for any shops in Ill.

Here check this out.

Its a Mitsu, but it should be a close match up front for what you would need to do/ get done.

Anything is possible. Check with a good shop to see if and how much.

Good Luck,

I sent a e-mail yesterday to a very reputable place that has mad countless mags. I have to go talk to him to see what the deal is.

they say it can be done

check out the email I was sent :frustrate

That kit is also available. It looks just like the one in the Ranger seen on the website. I just don't have any pictures of one of those trucks that we have sold a kit to.
Let me know if I can help. Thanks

Subject: Straight Axle conversion

Well I see that you have information on the straight axle conversions for F150 and Ranger from a torsion set up...I was wondering if you would soon have one for the Explorer (95-97)?

Thanks,
Karol

So hang are you saying that there is a kit for the ranger. If there is one for the new ranger then OH BOY WE ARE IN LUCK!!! Karol if there is in fact one e-mail me at home please COMMOCOZY@MSN.COM we should chat! also i have to say you are one of the coolest women's i have ever know :-) i wish my G/F was into this as much as you are!

I've corresponded with the folks at http://www.setstr8.com before. Last I heard they are looking for a 95+ Explorer to try a solid axle conversion on. If I recall correctly, it will cost $1,900. I'll have to go back and check, but try contacting them to get some info.

I've seen the setstr8.com stuff. . .but for only $1,900. . what are we all waiting for?? :) I was under the impression that it was more like $3,000.

ok guys

:hammer:

http://www.setstr8.com/

click on "New Products" that will bring you to the ad that I was referring to in the email..... If there are enough of us Ford Explorer peeps who inquire they may make us a kit of our own instead of a modified Ranger version.... I want to do this and I will have the $$ by the fall if all goes right with my career change

If you guys hear anything more or get any more information let me know

Karol.....

Well

Tim

IF alll they need is a torsion bar set up Explorer and $1900 to do the conversion on (experimental Im assuming) then sign me up!!

Com

I really just started to get interested in all of this in the last two years..... I worked very hard and asked alot of questions...and tried to learn and do as much as I can .... it comes from pure pride in your truck and some dedicated interest.... Some girls just want to drive and put gas in... I want to know how it works... why it works...why it doesn't work ... and best of all how much money I save when I do it myself......

i think back to my niave days and shake my head at how much $$$ was put out for simple things.... how much $$ was wasted on things that were not necessary but i had done because it was "recommended" (yeah recommended that I relieve my purse of green to line the mech's pocket) I just got sick of the nonsense "recommendations" and started asking frequent questions... She may come around yet give her a chance ... take her out wheeling with you and tell her "it's important to me that you are with me....I want to share this with you sometimes"
That will get her...She'll melt ... and with that...she'll either love it or hate it.... but she'll never know unless she tries it...oohh yeah another thing let her drive offroad and tell her how much fun you are having... (she'll love that)

Found it!

I received this e-mail on February 6th of this year. He was confused at first because he thought I was refering to a 91-94 Explorer at first:

Hey Tim,

I apologize for the confusion. For some odd reason I was thinking you were asking about our '94 kit. As for the '95 and up, we are getting ready to look into developing one. It is not yet out. It will probably be next year as we are finishing up our two Chevrolet kits. We will be looking for a donor vehicle to build one by at that time. The kit will probably run around the $1900.00 range. Again, I am so sorry for the confusion.... Please let me know if there is anything we can do for you.

Thanks for your interest,
Chris Brown

That price may or may not include the axle. I'm not sure. They may not make you pay for the axle because this is all "experimental." Not sure.

Austin, I've got a spare housing if you decide to go through with this.

I will be going through with it Kampy! it is just a mater of money.. Like i said in the first post i have a nice law suite i am waiting on. I am not holding my breath tho. It has been 3 years and no money, but it looks like it is coming to an end sometime soon.

how much do you want for it Kampy? maybe i will pick it up and just let it sit.

i have a buddy with a 99 ranger and he has a straight axle d44 in the front with national leafs 1000 rti and he has a good ride on street if u want i can take pics of the whole front and explain how he did it

DUDE THAT WOULD BE SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!! i am sure everyone with a late model would thank you!

alright i will make sure to take pics of everything i hate this guy (not really) atlass 2 ,dana44 front dana 50 rear , ARB's front and rear and a whole lot of body damage

Clint - A Dana 50 rear? Not a Dana 60? I had been led to believe that the Dana 50 only existed as a TTB... Hmm......
