I ran across this pic of this steering setup for a competition mud truck..

Its the 1st time I've seen steering quite like this on a Solid front axle..

Is this something that would work on a something that see's rocks or highway? Or is this just a problem waiting to happen?

im saying problem waiting to happen. once that thing flexes it looks like the steering will break

If the rack was full hydro (aka double ended cylinder) it would probably be awesome but as is it will bind and probably break. But at least no bump steer :D

I think Mark has been in the Sun to long to even consider something like this. :D

I....I... I don't even no what to say.

But this would be a hoot over on Pirate:thumbsup::D

I wasn't considering it.. I just never saw something like this. It just kinda looked like hydro steering using something other than hydro..

I am on the lookout to change how the steering/suspension is on the Van, and this just looked different. But I couldn't really figure how it would work when if flexed..

the Fun has begun...I posted the pic over on Pirate.:D

Looks like someone couldnt afford a double ended hydro cylinder and forgot that the vehicle "flexed" :)

EDIT - on second thought, that rack looks new so it probably wasnt a money thing. Maybe the builder was just new to hydraulics.

lol

Sorry Mark just had to harass you a bit. Now put down the tools and step away from the Van!:salute:

i looked it over real good, , seems to be bolted to the axle , not a frame member, hmm,
it is weird, but might possibly work, ,
only real probelm i can see right offhand is that the steering linkage has to have a slider section in it like a driveshaft, ,
and, if the axle pivots a bit sideways, the steering shaft will bind on the engine block , or the headers,
althought it is not a great idea, it is creative,,

Just thought I would throw in my 2 cent. I did not see the pic but a friend of mine had a simmiler set up. They were not allowed to run full hydro due to track rules. He could not make it go straight due to the retarded steering set up that chevy has. I could not convence them to go high steer. So they used a rack and it worked quite well, kind of scary looking but it worked.

OK, where are the links or pics to what you guys are talking about. Must have been some secret government cover up thing... The truth is out there

That is my fault, I hotlinked the pic. Bascially, they had a rack/pinion steering setup bolted to the front of a solid axle which turned the knuckles.
