This morning my 92 sport started making a grinding sound when i tried starting it up. I popped the hood to see if i could notice anything out right going on, and noticed some smoke seeping out from the filter area of the intake. i pulled it off from the intake manifold i believe its called, pushed open the little flap to see a bit more smoke. It smells very much so like burning electronics of some sort. My first guess is the started is going out, but if anyone can think of something else that may be causing this please let me know.

Thanks in advance!

Could you describe the grinding sound more? was it a really fast repetitive sound, or slower like with the engine turning over? It's possible that your starter motors teeth have broken and it's grinding against the flywheel when you start. As for the smoke, if it was coming from inside the intake, then the only thing that would smoke from there is combustible fluid such as gas or oil, its possible that you had a backfire if the engine turned over and fired before the starter lost its grip and the smoke you saw was the exhaust basically coming back up through a half-opened intake valve... Update with more info..

The grinding is really fast and repetative. Not sure how else to describe it, I could get a sound clip posted if it would help? I spoke with my brother who thinks its the starter as it sounds like a similar issue he had.

What you said about the smoke makes good sense. It was very alarming though since I've never seen that happen before.

Got a starter from autozone, waiting for a friend to bring some tools (not at my own home). Thanks for the speedy reply, ill update the post if it works. Any other ideas please let me know.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to this post. So i got the part, got under my truck and you wouldn't believe it... the fricken starter was barley holding on. I tightened it back up, and shes working just fine now. I feel silly, but id rather feel silly than $180 poorer for the new starter. Thanks again for the reply!

that's great to hear, interesting that the starter was loose, guess it was never installed properly, luckily it was an easy fix!
