I was given an offer via Truecar for the Limited w/ 302A for $39588 (minus the $1000 Customer Cash) and I tried to see if a closer dealer would be willing to sell at that price.

I get a response that the GM says that the Explorer's are being marked up 2-3k on top of MSRP but in light of the Truecar offer they would sell it to me at MSRP...

Makes you wonder huh?

The local dealers here call it "market adjust". Luckily, we have dealers out of the city too where you wouldn't have to pay city sales tax which would help some.

Also, Something i"ve heard people do, but we didn't do.. Buy it from a dealer (internet sale) out of state and have it shipped to your dealer. As I understand it, the local dealer can only charge so much for the prep etc. At least that is how we were told to do it using the X plan for our next mustang.

Just lie and tell him that another dealer is gonna do the true car price, only reason you'd go with him is bc you are closer however you aren't going to pay more than the truecar price (that the other dealer quoted you)... see what he says. my guess is he will match the truecar price.

The greedy ones will regret it once supply catches demand.

Don't get it? I already have a dealer that will do the Truecar price confirmed, its just a bit farther away.

Sorry I thought you just had gone on the truecar website, and not talked to that dealer. My mistake.

So go with the cheaper dealer. I'm going 2.5 hours away for the best deal. saving me over 3 grand so it's worth it.

Good example of a shady dealer. Go check out www.soundford.com Check out what they list the MSRP at and then the internet sales price. They also post the window sticker which just makes no sense to me because you can then see the window sticker is the same price as their special internet sales price. So they are lying on their site and providing you with the information to prove they are lying lol

holy crap... They try to claim retail for their XLT 10 grand over msrp... that's just absurd...

Yeah I could not believe it when I saw it.

A friend of mine is a mechanic at a local dealer (not Ford though) and he said its ridiculous how much the markup price is over how much the dealer gets the vehicle for. Other than providing vehicle service, the dealer is a middle man that's inflating the price.

Thankfully I have the X plan and a good dealership. Anyone that is near Central PA, I'd highly recommend Lake Ford in Lewistown. They refuse to mark any vehicles over MSRP (including GT-500's :) )

Forget MSRP, you can get it below invoice if you shop around. That would be about $3k savings. Worth the effort in my book.

How do I know? My price is $500 below invoice, and I could probably gotten a little more if I wanted to battle any longer.

Just go to the Bank of America website and use their car buying service. You don't need to be a BofA customer to use it. They gave me a price of $300 below dealer invoice. They will then send you a list of preferred dealers to go to who will honor that price. Going any other route is a complete waste of your time (useless negotiations). I ordered a Lmtd w 301A, towing and mats. Car is due to be delivered next week. I can't wait.

I could have purchased a car off the lot with the same discount but the dealers by me did not have what I was looking for.

Good luck!

Just go to eBay and search for the 2011 Explorer. eBay has a buying service that will hook you up with a local dealer. Got mine below even the eBay price.

If you're lucky enough to be a member, USAA offers the same type of deal. Heads up to the military/retired crowd! :salute:

Buying a new car (or just about anything) for a fair price, to both parties, is a function of your negotiating skills, availability, and timetable, just to name a few of the most critical.
