I am helping out a member with a TC problem. I sold him a 4405 TC... and the stickers on it noted "torque on demand" and "traction on demand" - which I assume might mean it was from an 98 or newer but really have no clue.

He is installing it as we speak (this is a stranded vehicle away from home - which is why it made sense for him to have me help him out with one since he is stranded near me) and he notes 2 things as he is installing the "new" one from me... The bad one he is replacing has a last digit of 5 on the tag, and the one he will be installing has an 8. His has a sensor positioned near the output shaft, and the one he is installing does not. His vehicle is a 97.

Q. Can someone explain this (I am assuming this is an OSS of some type?)

Q. Will the replacement at least work enough for him to drive is 200 miles home?

Q. Will he have (othe than a possible MIL) - any difficulties trying to get home of an operational nature?

I know, I'm the trans guru, but I am NOT the Transfer case guru. All help appreciated. I'm hoping someone knowledgeable is leisurely browsing and reads this I want to get back to him ASAP... but also understand what will come in the way of a response will come when someone sees this who CAN respond. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Its been a while since I handled the 4405 so I went out to my brother's 97 and disconnected that sensor to mimic the 98-and-up transfer case -- all shift points are the same, only thing that wont work is the speedometer. The CEL (or any other dash ligths for that matter) didnt come on but I only drove it for about 5 mins. So 200 miles should be no problem :D

You my co-mod are a godsend. I searched and found your thread on the hydridized 4405, but was concerned that the PCM might also use that VSS for shift points.... in addition to the speedo.

Thanks for the above and beyond. This young man and his father will be delighted to know what you did for them. They are having some trouble getting it installed and are coming back to borrow my transmission jack, any install tips I can pass along?

I was afraid of that too (the PCM using the VSS for the shift points) -- thats why I had to verify it tonight cauz its been a loooong time since I touched the 4405 :(

As for installation tips, the only hard thing is getting the transfer case in because the shift motor run very close to the gas tank before the transmission's output shaft can slide into the transfer case. One way of course is to install the transfer case clocked with the shift motor down, and before the tranfer case's "pin" runs into the tailshaft-housing, rotate the transfer case to its final angle and then push it all the way to the tailshaft housing. And as you already know, supporting the transfer case to minimize the amount of weight on the transmission's output shaft is important :D Depending on how strong (and drunk) the person doing the installation is and how high the vehicle is jacked up, it is sometimes easier to lay under the vehicle face up and have the transfer case resting on one's chest (with a rubber mat or something between the transfer case and one's chest for some protection) -- and then just push the transfer case vertically as if doing a bench-press . But I just remembered that you mentioned the transmission jack, so all the unnecessary work is probably not needed :D

They were here and I gave them the jack, and your reply. Theyare really appreciative. Final Q... does the electrical connector plug and play ?

They claim there are some pins present and or absent as between the two though the housing is the same.

btw. I really appreciate your prompt response... maybe just good luck and karma but it really helped in this situation. I thank you for me and them.

Thats right :D There will be pins missing -- of at least two of them is becuase of the sensor. But the electrical connections should plug in w/o a problem.

When I swapped in my old '98 TC into my brother's '97 Explorer, everything worked except for the speedometer -- which of course lead me to swap the back-halves of the TC's cases.

After a few months of not riding a bike, today's ride was a little brutal so I really can not do anything else except sit here and peruse the endless web ;)

I used to do quite of bike riding with A GF who introduced me to it, including a trip of about 750 miles up through the Yukon. Today I bet my butt would hurt after a 5 mile ride.

ps. She' no longer my GF, (though a very nice lady pre and post me) and last summer she rode across the USA. Can you say too many miiles?

We started up out of Skagway and ended in Anchorage. It was spectacular. 2 weeks on the bike.

By the way I passed on your info via cell to them. I know you will be hearing from them expressing their appreciation. Really nice father and son duo. I showed them in real life the difference between the 5R55 and the 4R70W... ( I was cleaning some parts and doing some sandblasting and painting today so had some out) and they were suitably struck by the impressive differences.

Colin has a new found respect for what is under him methinks. (5R55E and 4405).

LOL i just looked at that route on GoogleMaps and WOW! thats quite the ride through those peaks!

it was a grand ride. Our hosts were living in Anchorage, formerly Sacramentans, and well known to the rest of the group. They brought their Suburban from Anchorage to Skagway to meet us to start the ride and for us to use it as the SAG vehicle. So we rode more or less unloaded, and if you got tired you could be the SAG driver. They had it planned so we slept in beds every night along the way...and in the Yukon many places had no electricity except for local generated on site (Except Whitehorse, of course). Shortest day? 35 miles, longest 105 miles. Was a great way to see the Yukon. I loved the Yukon. Would go back to visit in a heartbeat.

What time of the year? And how were the temps?

It was June and the weather was generally good. We had one cold day in rain....(miserable) otherwise it was 60's to high 70's

Update. They got the TC installed, said the trans jack was a huge help. They have no speedo (as we knew) but as I feared, the PCM does use that input for its purposes. So he is in Failure Effects Management Mode - hard shifts etc... but on the freeway that won't matter so much and he WILL get home. He said that didn't show up until about 20 mins of driving.

In hindsight I should have loaned him a scanner to continually reset the puter.

Anyway We'll open up his 4405 and peek inside this week, together. Should be fun.

Gah - sorry about that, I should have driven my brother's X for a longer time to force the PCM to default values.

Not to be sorry. He DID make it home ok. I am gonna ship him a scanner to use to reset the computer to avoid living with FMEM. IZWACK, what you did was above and beyond. The peace of mind was immense, thanks.
