Yes, it's true. I now have a .6" hole about 4 inches directly above the gas filler flap (in my 2002 Ford Explorer Sport).

Can anybody tell me a reasonable method for a neophyte to plug the hole.

I don't want to damage the surrounding paint and don't have the expertise and equipment to weld it, so I'm thinking some fiberglass kit may be the best way to plug the hole.

Any suggestions?

FYI: there is no backing, just the hole with the metal forced back -- as you would expect from a bullet. I'd like to paint it with matching Ford paint (Gold color) if not too expensive. The damage area is ~1.4" D

A little off topic, but how did you end up with a bullet hole in your gas flap. Where you riding dirty in Cali?

Just fill it with bondo and paint over it , easiest way.

Why would someone fire a round into my Explorer?

I really don't know. I live in a gang-infested area (suburb of Los Angeles) and have only recently (last 2 months) starting parking the Explorer out on the street (due to my having recently purchased a Porsche Boxster that I park in my (one) off-street parking space.)

I can only surmise that someone took umbrage at me parking in front of their residence. Or on "their" street. Who knows what twisted logic clogs up gang-members shallow minds.

An LAPD officer took a report and I received a call from a detective, but there's not much they can do (although the bullet projectile is still lodged in the Explorer -- encased in the metal about an inch past the initial hole).

leave it in and make up a cool story

hell yea, you can say you have a real bullet holes, which is way cooler than the stupid little bullet hole stickers people put on their cars that they think look cool and tough.

Sounds like you need to move. Next stray bullet may come through a window
