i just bought a 98 explorer and i want to get it lifted. the problem im finding is there is only 2 made for that year. i want to know what the differences in the suspension of a 94 and a 98.
They deffinitly are very very different. The 1st gen explorers have a TTB front axle (it's a weird hybrid between a solid axle and an ifs). The 1st gen also has coil springs and radius arms. The 98 uses torsions bars for springs, and a true independent front suspension. The lift kits are not compatable. Are you a 4x4 or a 2x4? If you have a 4x4 you can lift the front of your expo with a torsion twist (do a search...MANY threads about it) 2", anything more and you'll blow the cv's. If you have a 2x4 then i've heard of people doing a tt for up to 7" lift, you would have no droop and the ride would be crap though. You can also do body lifts, but I don't there there is one made specifically for the 2nd gen, you have to buy a ranger body lift of the appropriate year and build new bumper brackets (search...MANY threads about this also). For the rear you can do add a leafs, warrior shackles, or a combination depending on how far you lift the front.
