i have a 99 ford explorer xlt 4.0 sohc vin e. i am trying to find out what years the tranny is interchangable with. i found a 96 and i think it will fit, but im not sure please someone help me

Welcome to this forum! The 99 has a 5R55E. The 96 has a 4R55E. 97-2001 (2002 in Sport Trac) use the 5R55E. The 97 models have an extra ODS sensor. 2001-up have an ISS sensor. Check # 7 in my list of useful threads for more information. The 98-2000 5R55E should be the same.

the Hollander Manuals say '99-'01 2WD use number 3399, 4WD use model 3400. they do have a notation on '01 ex sport "only use ID #XL2P-CA (thru 7/23/00)"....after that date, they list another Hollander # to use. I have no clue what may be different on the 2DR sport tranny after 7/23/00.

Ford almost always makes the changes during a model year. Meaning that they fix the problem as soon as possible. But it makes swapping parts interesting. Good luck,
