Hi Folks,

Great forum, first post for a man who said "nah...I ain't gonna buy an old shogun, I need an old explorer!!!" and I am starting to regret that comment!

Aside from the camchain errr 'issue' that I just resolved, at a price!, I have a couple of problems with the brakes that are driving me up the wall.

The first problem was the noise coming from the front end, really loud, really annoying. Changed the pads and the discs and the noise (virtually) went away. Now I am getting a "Chuff.....Chuff....chuff" noise from the the front end when braking.

The second problem is the perennial issue of abs coming on at low speed (1-2mph) frightened the Carp out of me on the first event, and you could hear the modulator and feel the pedal pumping. There was no ABS warning light at any stage, So....I changed the front sensors, to no avail.

I disconnected the ABS and the low speed activation issue went away.

Today, I connected up to a mate's laptop and it read a bunch of error codes commensurate with the ABS being disconnected, and after resetting absolutely no error codes found!

So then, since the ABS unit works, throws out no error codes whatsoever, the sensors check out but its still doing what it shouldn't, I have kind of convinced myself of the fault, but need someone to argue with me and tell my why I am wrong:

1. On the PC All sensors check out, ABS checks out, so it actually 'thinks' that the wheels are skidding
2. No traction control to fool the ABS
3. Chuff Chuff Chuff noise on braking due to some mechanical issue.

Therefore, the front hubs have gone, the bearing giving 'Chuff' and also, runout in a worn bearing (and so tone ring) fools the ABS to think that it is skidding...

Now please tell me why I am wrong before I buy new hubs!!

Thanks Guys. Tally ho!

Neil ;)

p.s Now I can feel the bloody coursing through my veins accompanied by a voice in my head saying Shogun, Shogun, Shogun!

before you get all expensed up in buying hubs, raise the vehicle up on jackstands, and turn the wheels by hand to see what is making the noise,
you can even remove the wheels and rotate the axles by hand to see if you can find the issue with the noise ..
could be a warped rotor,,

No argument here. By description it sounds like a hub/bearing to me.
That should resolve your ABS issue, but if it does not, there is one other ABS sensor that is mounted on the rear differential. It is the only electrical connection on the axle and is just about center top of the "pumpkin".
Good Luck

If the ABS is kicking back on you then there's probably air in a line. As for the other sound it could be a warped rotor.

air in the line should have nothing to do with an abs fault

jack the front of the vehicle up, grab the wheel at the 12 and 6 o clock positions and rock it. if theres movement then you know the hubs are bad.

a "chuff chuff chuff" could be contact from a pad shim or the backing plate to the rotor. spin the wheels while its up and see if u can duplicate and zero in on the noise

I had air in these lines after breaking a line and my pedal kicked back on me and pulsated. I took it to the shop and had them machine bleed them and replace the fluid and it was fine after that. They told me there is a section of the lines that can't be done manually.

If it quit kicking back on him after shutting off the ABS then it's an ABS problem.

low speed abs engagement means the sensors are probably getting crap thrown at them from the bearings... its like the truck is telling you to replace the front hubs

my truck has done this twice so far, and I'm sure it isnt the last time

you can check this by pulling the ABS sensor and looking for metal shavings in the hub or on the sensor itself

Honestly the first time this happened and I took it to my mechanic it took him a solid week to figure this out

Thanks very much for the quick replies gents. I appreciate it!

One thing that I did negect to mention (stupid me) is that I have already put new pads and rotors on the front, along second hand (but tested) sensors

So the chuff chuff unlikely to be the rotor or pads....and there doesn't appear to be any physical play in the hubs.

Aggghhhh this is driving me nuts!

This exact thing happened to me back this summer. Abs light came on ignored it and then finally the hub broke off. Luckily not while driving. Like corkey said jack the truck up and grab the tire at 12 and 6 and move out towards you and back in towards the truck. If its bad then there will be alot of play. Its an easy repair to replace the hub took me an hour the first time and now can do it in a half hour

OK chaps,

I think that I'm gonna get those hubs ordered. I have seen some for sale on Ebay...but as usual, i am alway troubled by the quality of stuff on Ebay, does anyone have a better source (UK OR USA)

Tally ho!!

Neil

This is the only mechanical item I buy from Autozone, (U.S. Autoparts retailer) they actually sell the best one on the market. Very hard to believe, I know, considering 90% of the parts they sell $uc%.
Try to find a Timken Hub/bearing if you can, probably won't find them on e-bay.

Hi Chaps,

Just to let you know that I replaced both hubs on Saturday and the difference was IMMEDIATE.

Now the ABS is not kicking in at 1mph and all groaning noises have disappeared!

Woo hoo!!

Now all I have is two left over sensors that will make great spares!

Thansk for your input and help to all. Great and informative forum.

Tally Ho...:D:D
