been thinking about the brown wire mod, i have a few questions about this that i could find answer to, Are there any downfalls to this, such as ones that would call for me to spend money to fix somthing? where exactly do i splice, ive read to do it by the driver seat, behind the dash on the right, on the left, i have no idea where? And how do i wire a switch so the light gets brighet and dimmer according to the signal being sent from the TOD (i beleive thats what it is). i apologise for the time you may waste posting in this thread. oh yea, i have a 99XLT4x4 just like the name. TIA.

You need to wire in a relay into the brown wire under the seat. There are no real downsides your t-case doesn't really care if it's sending power to the front or not. It's like being in 2wd except your in low range. As far as the light you need to wire it in between the relay and the brown wire, as well as make sure it can handle the amperage. If you search there are lot of good threads on this topic.

Here is the most simple way I can think to answer your questions.

For location, I took off the kick panel that would be next to your left foot while your were sitting in the driver seat. The same bundle of wires from under the driver seat is routed behind that panel, and its very easy to get to on my 97. I cut the brown wire and added about a foot of extra wire to each cut piece. Route these two wires behind the plastic panel under the steering wheel. Cut a hole in the panel and pull the wires through.

I used a plain led switch that goes on and off, and has three metal pieces on the back. Attached the two brown wire extensions to to the switch and a ground wire to the third connector. Route that back through the hole and attach to somehting metal. Thats it. The led will be off in the off (2wd) position, a little brite when in 4 auto, and very bright in 4hi or when the transfer case transfers power when in 4auto.

This mod cost me $5 for the switch, and $5 for some spare wire. Its not as difficult as those long threads make it seem.
