Sound system virgin-help!

right now I'm running a single 10" JL (low end $100 new) in the back of my X, self built box out of 3/4" MDF and pushing it with a small 600 watt kenwood amp (probably around 200 rms) if you want to check it out just get ahold of me, my truck doesnt run right now but the system still works :D and I could give you a hand with the layout/cutting building of the box

I think a Bazooka NOS bottle would totally set off the "GT" thing you are going for.:D

HEE HEE HEE If I were going to put a NOS bottle in my X it would be the real deal ;) :D

I spoke with my pal at Circuit City today and he suggested 3/4" MDF board. He also mentioned that I should caulk the seams on the inside and drill pilot holes for the screws so they don't cause the compressed wood to split apart...Sheesh, the way things are going, this sucker's gonna weigh over a hundred pounds when all is said and done

Here's the measurements of the cargo hold in a Sport 2 door , not a 4 door ...I thought they might come in handy for anyone who's also thinkng of doing this.

hehe, someone went nuts with a tape measure :D

oh, and for the box, 3/4 mdf is the way to go, I use stainless steel screws, pilot holes, and liquid nails to put the box together, then seal the inside with caulking to keep everything tight, my box right now I need to make a gasket for where the sub mounts to the box, hits hard enough to cause the air to leak around it =)

Allright gang, I got two Rockford Fosgate 8ohm 10" subs (the 2002, higher output model) and a Kenwood 600W amp last night! Got monster cable for them too ;) Unfortunately, I've run into a few problems with building the box...

RF's recommended box specs per sub are 14"H x 15"W x 10" deep. I've decided to scrap the idea that I posted earlier in favor of making a single box for both subs and amp that will fit up against the back of the seat. I do NOT want it to be higher than 12", though. Also, if I can make the whole deal thinner than 10" (maybe 8?) that would be awesome.... I have 41" of width to work with, so what I need to know from you math geniuses is if a box measuring 12"H x 40"W x 8" deep will be enough air?

And that's not even including the fact that I have to make an indentation 13" wide x 10"Long x 2 1/2" deep!!!!!! If I have to, I'll just surface mount the amp, but I really don't want to. See my dilemma?? lol

Odd, didnt think a 10" would need that much cu-feet of air space, what model # are the subs?

Edit: opps, yeah that box size does sound about right, should be close to 1'cu of space, there are a few ways to get the fit/set up you wanted though, poly fill in the box will cause the box to act like a larger box and the custom set up you wanted would probably work out to having enough cubic feet of space for the 10" easy...

Well, here's the new design :D

I stayed up till the wee hours last night, calculating via RF's specs, which are Height x Length x Depth divided by 1728.
After thinking I had it all figured out, I realized that that's for EXTERNAL dimensions-I forgot about the fact that there's 3/4"s of wood to compensate for

So, what it all boils down to is 12" High x 41" Long x 8" deep equals .78 cubic feet of space per sub, once you factor in the 1.5" of wood wall involved :D I think...lol

RF says that the subs need between something like .48-1.75 feet of space to work properly, and that .75 is the recommended air to get the best sound, so I think I'm all set ;) The extra little bit of space from the extension that the amp will be in won't affect the subs at all.

Now to build the damn thing! Wolf, do you have any circular saws at your house?

Sighhh

Okay after much grief from Best Buy and >ahem< others :D , I returned the Rockford Fosgates and won a pair of used JL Audio W6's on Ebay :D

I'm very much looking forward to putting them in and hitting the road for a few hours of cruising to enjoy them properly ;)

Should have everything (hopefully) done by next Friday with pics soon to follow-hang in there!

some duct-tape, cardboard, gaffers tape, zip ties, and some left over lamp cord and I should be able to toss together a sub box :D ....also whats a circular saw, I was going to use my hacksaw to do everything :p

Anyways, box design might get some last min changes depending on what I can come up with, box will be built from 3/4" MDF, liquid nailed and screwed together with stainless steel screws, also braces will be put in the box seeing that the subs are JL W6's now, I'll be sure to take many pics for those who want to see whats getting built...

PS: the saw and tape stuff is a joke... the cardboard isnt

Hey, who's project is this, anyway?! LMAO :D :D

Cardboard!!!!!!! EEEEEEK!

The braces sound like a good idea tho....Wonder how hard it would be to work some plexiglass into this monster too

I'm gonna grab some grey carpet from tweeter instead of doing the vinyl thing. I looked into it and not only is it a royal PITA to get right, vinyl apparently rips pretty easily and I'm notoriously rough on my cargo hold (dogs, spastic cats, tree stumps, mulch, etc)
