hi i have a 98 xlt and i asked this guy if he can do a custom cat back with a single in dual out flowmaster 50 and he said he can as long as i can take out the spare tire?

my question is is it do-able without removing the spare tire?

and he said it will better just to get a single in/out because i have a plastic gas tank and if the muffler overheat it will mess up the tank!!!!!!(is this possible)

i also want my ex lower so he said i should lower it first before installing the muffler...is this also true?

i really want to get single in dual out so any help will really be appreciated......

I know it would be best to lower your X first because if not, he can just put the exhaust anywhere. Then you lower it and it scrapes over everything.

Single out will be much easier and will also help you keep performance. It is a good idea to do suspension mods before exhaust work, but not totally necessary. Things are tight back there, and he is right that the plastic gas tank poses a problem. You'd want a heatshield between the pipe and tank. But a dual out should be doable with the spare, just need a good pipe bender.

Which engine do you have?
If you have the SOHC the stock exhaust is a dual in single out.

i have an sohc engine

where can you get heatshield and how much would it cost......

Any speed shop should have good heatshield materials. But you could simply use some thin sheet aluminum and put some header (heat reflecting) tape on it.

so what youre saying that if i want a dual out i should go with dual in dual out?
(can it be single in dual out cuase i think its cheaper)

one more question

i just looked underneath my ex and saw that the muffler i have on right now only has a single in single out instead of the dualin/single out......\

does the stock mufflers on ex come with dual/single?

i almost ordered dual in/out now i guess i have to get singlein/dual out

please someone clarify my engine is sohc

Some sohcs came with single in/single out, some have dual in/single out. Glad you looked before you ordered it

why would they do some with single in and some with dual in?

It's Ford, dunno. They changed it mid 1998 I believe.

That's why the Gibson catback system for the SOHC is single in only. They didn't R&D enough and their kit only fits a small number of SOHC X's.

ah well mine was made in 6/98 so its a pretty late 98 so i guess all the 99s and up have dual in?

Along the same lines:
Why does my ex's X have the OHV, 5 speed auto, and it's a 98? Oh, it also came with 225/70/15 tires: 27's! (and now they won't reprogram it for 235/75s; not my problem anymore!)

As long as you have the 15" spare a dual exhaust will fit fine. I have one and so do several other people on the board. Some muffler shops just dont want to go to the trouble of bending the pipes.
