Aerostar plug and wiring choices
Don- I'm looking to reinstall a reconditioned 4.0 in my '91, and like any sane person, don't want to be doing plugs and wires on this chinese puzzle ever, if possible. The cost of a mechanic replacing plugs and wires is multiples of the parts.
I see your logic in going with a lifetime (Autozone?) wire set, but a l/t warrantee is often money-back marketing, not a true guarantee of durability. So I'm curious if you did any research, beyond buying the top house brand at a franchise that is better known for price-point than quality.
I'm not attacking your choices, no offence pls. I am looking for any info leverage, to use myself. Just trying to figure this out, so I'm not spending all day changing plugs and cables, after flunking smog in 3 years.
It used to be that OE was the baseline of quality, a guarantee of at least 3-5 years of service. But the factories that made my '91 XL parts are probably rusting now, the parts coming from Asia. And shouldn't materials quality improve, production costs drop in $25 years? Likewise 'performance' parts may have 'race' quality buzz, but acceleration's not the same as durability or fuel efficiency, which is the performance that counts for me.
Given the cost of repairs that I'm undertaking, I am looking at price, and am willing to go offbrand, while looking for quality-price tradeoffs. I see an off brand cable set that claims to meet/exceed OE standards, looks like motorcraft-autolite, at a 'zone' price.
