My 95 Explorer has 153K miles and I was WAY overdue for a spark plug change along with new wires. Now I can't remember what thread I found for advice on here but someone mentioned an alternative to the passenger side wheel well. I was able to take half the air filter canister off (the part with the MAF sensor) along with the whole boot to the throttle body. Then take the upper radiator hose off. I was able to reach all 3 passenger plugs (#1,2,3). Now I had to use an exacto type cutter to pull off the #2 and #3 boots but it worked well since I was replacing the wires anyway. I followed the advice of putting a little dielectric grease inside the boots and anti-seize for the plugs. I was able to hand guide the plugs into the threads to make sure I did not strip the aluminum threads in the block. In order to take the upper radiator hose off be sure to drain engine coolant at the petcock drain (radiator) up to a couple of quarts or so to empty engine coolant in the upper radiator hose. I just replaced with new coolant at the radiator cap when done. That's it! I had never changed spark plugs or wires in a car and this worked fine for me. Hope this works for someone else who does not want to go through the wheel well. I did mine on my 96 4.0 from the top, but did not pull the radiator hose. However it might have been easier. I also bought a long spark plug socket, and did not need an extension, if I remember correctly. Use a long 3/8 drive flex ratchet.
