I'm looking to match a single 12" sub to a 150x1 rms amp. I'm debating weather or not to get a dual voice coil 4-ohm amp and run the coils in parallel to up the power to 230x1 rms this speaker has a max power of 400w, or...
a single voice coil 12" sub at 4-ohm which has a max power of 200w.

so that is

2-ohm at 230x1 with 12" sub max at 400w
4-ohm at 150x1 with 12" sub mox at 200w

thanks. I don't know what was going on in the chat. I think I got dropped too. oh well.

Ummm.. What are you seeking to get out of the sub? SPL or SQ? What brand of sub? amp? How you run it would depend on what kind of sub you get and the specs of the sub as to what would be better.

I'm looking for SQ rather than spl. I'm sure that with a 12" it will be loud enough for my liking. I just want to have solid sounding low's.

It's a kenwood amp, and I'm looking at a Rockford sub.

I guess in that case I would go with the dual voice coil. I have 2 DVC 12's and I love them. The ones I have are more SPL based but they are good for SQ too.

even though with the 4-ohm 12" i will push it closer to the peak power rating?

Just keep the gains down. If you are only using it for daily driving and not crank it, I doubt that your amp will even need to push out that much power to the sub, but I would be happy knowing that if there was some punk you needed to show up, or just wanted to crank it, you had the power available.
