As all of you know, there are many questions on speaker sizes and round versus oval. Hoping to clear a few things up, I am posting this small thread on some pros and cons for the different speakers.
Many vehicles come factory with oval speakers which in turn tend to sound like crap to some degree. They might be acceptable to the normal person, but to the majority they tend to not do the trick and need to be the first modification to the vehicle. Replacement that is.
The round speaker has a smaller surface area than the oval speaker when you are replacing in the stock speaker mounting location. The round speaker to fit in the stock oval location requires an adapter plate or speaker adapter, however you prefer to say it. The round speaker is more rigid than the typical oval speaker due to it being symmetrical. In higher volume the round speaker maintains a better response and sound than the oval speaker which tends to distort in higher volumes. The oval speaker does produce more bass however in lower volume due to the fact that it does have more area, thus pushing more air resulting in higher bass output. So when changing from the factory sized oval to a smaller round speaker, you WILL lose bass. However the sound quality is much better with the round speaker.
If you can manage to customize the stock speaker location and install a larger round speaker than the factory oval-sized speaker, you are in a win-win situation, resulting in a better sound due to the rigidity of the round speaker and matching the surface area of the oval speaker, meaning same bass output, and higher volume without the distortion of the oval speaker.
All this information was obtained from Polk Audio, and Crutchfield
Advisor. Other information was also found using Google. Below is a link to an affordable site to purchase speaker adapters or speaker plates. I highly reccomend checking it out. Great site. Easy to follow.
