I just bought a '91 Explorer w/autolocking hubs, at, 4.0. When I tried 4x4 it didn't engage or disengage properly, I tried the reverse, etc, figured I could make it back home, about 4 miles from home I heard a pop and something fell off, brakes had to be pumped to work. 3/4 mi from home a scraping noise. when I pulled FL wheel, the hub came off and the 4x4 cam assembly was blown. Also missing the inner brake pad, had to replace caliper, pads, bearings, & converted to manual locking hubs. (passenger side was fine, but replaced pads & hub, repacked bearings). Used original seal because I bent new one when installing.
now has milemarker manual hubs, ($200 at the local parts store for the hubs and conversion kit). When I drive, it makes a clicking noise that increases/decreases relative to speed, goes away when braking. Would this be the brakes, wheel bearings, or the joint in the axle?
BTW, 4x4 also not engaging (tried on wet grass, rear wheels spun but front didn't) even tho light is coming on. Low Range won't even light the light.
