Hey everyone, I want to replace my speed sensor due to my speedometer jumping around while driving.

I got a 94 sport with 4x4 and the manual transmission. Other threads say its on the driver side of the transfer case but I can't seem to locate the sensor on the transfer case.

Any help is appreciated!

Well it is on the driver side of the transfer case, it can be a little hard to spot though. If you look where the rear driveshaft connects to the transfer case, just in front of that sticking out of the driver side of the transfer case is where it is at. It will have a black cable connected to it and is held in with one bolt.

Hope that kind of helps

Speedometer is not controlled by the speed sensor. The speed sensor is only for ABS, 3-4 shift and torque converter lockup. The speedometer jumping around is worn gears on the speedo cable. There's a thread on here. The speedometer cable does go into the end of the transfer case but you were probably looking for a sensor :)

Found it thanks!

I put in the new one today and now speedometer doesn't work so I'll have to figure out why.

The speedo is not electronic. It's cable driven by the gear at the sensor. You may have done something to the drive while it was apart?

Put the old one back in started working again. I don't know if part was bad or i put it in wrong.

It simply cannot be that sensor. The speedometer is cable driven and has no electronics associated with it aside from the light bulb that illuminates it.

What do you think causes the speedometer to jump?

As I said earlier, it's likely worn gears. Both of my Explorers do it. There's a thread on here about replacing the speedo gear and it shows how worn out they can get even though they're nylon gears bathed in oil.

Both of these guys are correct, the speedo is driven by a cable and gear. I just assumed that when you said sensor you were talking about the cable/gear. But I guess we all know what happens when you assume...

As nate said, it is most likely a worn drive gear for the cable. Which really shouldn't be that hard to replace. The speedo on my Ex jumps around too, very slightly though.

On of my 92s does this. The magnets inside the unit are weak. I had it apart a while ago cause it would register about 10 slower than actual. I force wound the spring to stretch it and gauged it against another good gauge by spinning it with a cordless drill.

It has been working great for the past 2 years. It just has a little bounce to it. There are magnets in a drum that spins with the drive cable. These magnets pull against another drum attached to the needle. The spring returns the needle to its stop. It's actually really simple setup.

BTW, my drill runs about 40 mph!

One of my old explorers bounced around...never fixed it. I did see a thread on here a while back that it might be the gear the speedo gear interfaces with. And for that the trans has to be opened up & the gear replaced. You can buy a new speed gear & that one is easy to replace. Pull it out & count the teeth on it. You can find them on Ebay last I checked.
