2006 explorer vehicle speed sensor location?

To tell if you have a 2wdhi 4wdhi 4wdlo compared to 4wdhi 4wdlo with brown wire case if you take the actuator motor off there is etching behind it telling you the positions! If you see 2wd there then you will have issues getting it into 4wd

Just got your post. Thanks so much. Here on the west coast. Not so late yet :) but still I think k I'll call it a day too!

You have the 2wd version as aposed to the auto 4x4 version that's s problem you might want to get a different transfer case! Didn't the 02 explores come with a stick shift option on the sports you could use that case if it's the same trans and could have used those parts as well ! As far as not starting that's because of the park neutral switch! And not getting key out as well it thinks it's in gear!

Tom

Lol to get it started you need to prob connect that range switch and leave it connected and just leave it in park that's what I would have done and for reverse lights I would then just splice in the wires and make a relay circuit to brake the park signal and activate the reverse you would need a single throw dual pole I believe

Tom

If you do a dual pole dual throw then you could incorporate the clutch peddle or just use 2 relays so you have to push the pedal in to make it think it's in park so you can start it

Tom

Tomorrow I will gather up pics of the wiring diagrams for you just takes time putting them on a google drive etc I'll get transmission transfer case and shifter wiring for you !

... well ... Many thanks Tom.... I should probably take my "non-stock progress" comments back to my other thread since we are now a bit off topic from identifying stock tcase wires.

Cheers.

...thank you Wilson Auto Wiring Database. This is what I found there for the 06 EX (and prob 06-10).

(see the bottom box for the gear switch which contains the reverse gear and neutral/park for starting system)

Link to park switch that unlocks the key in the ignition (for removal)

(it's a little built-in normally open switch inside the floor shifter that closes when in park. Had to pull it from the floor shifter and plug it into the cluster so I have to manually press the putton to remove key. plan to extend the wiring to the ignition so there is a "key release" button in the steering column)

And bingo... Driveline/Axle for Tcase (see pg 2)

... still reading through this. IF I can figure this one out.... I think I have the bulk of this thing ready to drive!

Figured it all out. Thanks Tom for getting me on the right track.

Your comment about the clutch in the t-case is spot on. Since I no longer have a clutch in my t-case my AWD system will keep sending signals to those two extra wires trying to "engage" 4wd when needed. However, the Ranger tcase is "2HI" instead of "AWD". So basically... I now have 2HI instead since there is no clutch anymore! :)

I should just wire up a bulb in place of that AWD clutch and run it to my dash. Basically it will just be an indicator for when I'm slipping and the truck wants me to press "4X4". hahha. but that's probably too much work right now.... So thumbs up to 2 more random wires hanging from my undercarriage!

Now for deciding whether or not I try to jimmy-rig a 2WD-LO (dedicated switch in dash) with the "brown wire mod" to the 4X4 LO setting. hahaha. I'll save that for another day.

If you're still interested... I will be posting all the wiring diagrams with highlights and notes on them in my build blog. You can find the link here:
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=411540

I will soon also post a "how to" (link in the progress blog) for the M5OD-R1HD swap which will save you at least 25hours of BS if you go that route. LOL.

That should dev get you close but your going to have a problem with 4wd cause you got the wrong one for your truck to keep that one you might have to wire in a separate switch for 4wd cause the clutch design t case has 4hi and 4lo with motor and uses the clutch pack to engage it fully as aposed to the one you got where it's 2hi 4hi or 4lo all on the motor that turns

Since I no longer have a clutch in the tcase... as you say... it engages by motor only (that's why no AWD can kick in by clutch is impossible and the motor is directly engaged to 4x4 or 2wd depending on the shift motor position). So essentially... I have just forfeited my AWD system. I never liked it anyway. Now I can do donuts with the supercharger in 2WD. LOL. (not that I want to)

Yes but now your going to have to do extra wiring to make sure the motor spins the correct amount for each position which means those 3 switches on your dash will do nothing and or you will have to figure out how to get those switches to talk to the smart junction box and send the required signal to the motor cause the only time the motor turned was when in 4lo in stock 06 now you need it to turn from 2 to 4hi to 4lo and back etc makes it more complicated if you really wanted to do burn outs and disable the stock 08 system you just needed to install a switch in between that coil wire and you would have 2wd and by doing that you gain more modes I did this on my 97 it gave me 2hi 2 low auto 4hi and 4low also in 2002 it was the last year for stick shift in explorers however many people converted there 05 to have stick you should read into those posts even though yours is the 4th gen there still could be similarities I do wish you the best and you took on a electrical monster lol if you want to make your system work correctly with no lights you will have to reprogram a few of your modules or just trick the computer into thinking it has a auto trans still make a small little box with the harness plug from the auto and calculate all the resistance in every item and sensor and make resistors accordingly and just hang the little box under the truck somewhere this way everything will work the way it's supposed to with out engine lights etc and you could tap off of that for your reverse lights and your park switch by using the relay and connecting it to clutch pedal but anyway I think your good from here if you have more questions either shoot me a pm or send a response here again and good luck to you can't wait to see the finished product on you thread

Tom

Exactly if you look the motor is hooked up to a reversible circuit in that module and there are 4 switches looks like and it's going to turn the motor a certain amount and send its return wire what position it's in to stop the motor that looks complicated to make like I said it just be easier to use the t case with the brown wire clutch the ranger had that option as well and 02 explorer should have it too.

Tom

...my hopes is that the computer module sends power to the shift motor 'UNTIL' it sees the correct position signal returned. if that is that case, I might be good.

Thanks for all your help. You got me on the right track for sure.

Glad to here I helped good luck to you make sure you post pics when it's all done

Tom

Hi Tom

Here's a pic! So far got everything working but I think I only have 2hi/4lo (or) 4hi/4lo. It's difficult to tell if all 4 are engaged. I sent you a PM about this...

edit.
please excuse the no shift boot etc. Got a hursh boot, new knob, laser cut boot-plate base, and custom black marine cup holders coming (so I can move them back about an inch so I don't knock over my coffee when I hit 2nd and 4th. hahha).
