Ok all,
97 Exlorer Sport
127,000ish.

Somethings toasted, It started off getting some bouncing on the speedo, 2-3 mph either way, and over the coarse of 45 minutes driving, has become much worse.

First it started thumping, at first I thought the trans was slipping, then after further thought and thumping, I started thinking it felt exactly like hitting the governer on my other truck.

A few more miles down the road, the speedo completely fell to 0, and the 4x4 lights begin flashing.

At this point I have no speedo, the 4x4 lights flash randomly 5 or 6 times, my check engine light is on, and its slow shifting, as in if I don't significantly let off the throttle, it just doesn't shift.

I'm ALL ears. I've heard maybe speed sensor? but I have no idea.

Thanks to any and all who reply.

A faulty rear axle speed sensor could cause the majority of those problems, but I would suspect the abs light to be on too. First step would be to retrieve the trouble codes.

The 97 still gets speed signal from the speed sensor on the transfer case. Sensor is on transfer case at the rear output shaft. It sticks out and has a connector on it (the 4X4 transfer case speed sensors only have wires). Should only cost about $40. No speed signal and your transmission goes into a limp mode.

Thanks guys, that was my suspiscion, I actually bought and replaced the speed sensor this morning after it tossed the code for it.

Fixed all but one problem.

Still no speedo!

As cool as it is to no see your odometer roll, I can't drive it currently as odo fraud isn't real great imo.

Any other ideas? Everything else btw, 100perc fixed and working great!

Thanks guys.
Chad
