hello,
I just put new 31" tires on my 96 xlt 4WD. if i do not put a new speedo gear in will it mess up how the transmission shifts with the new tire size? It doesn't seem like it would but today when i drove my explorer right after i put the new tires on it seemed to shift a little weird. Its possible it was just me though since i am not used to the new tires, and am paranoid that i am going to mess up my car if i do anything to it. Thanks,
-Andrew

also can somebody please give me the step by step of A) how to figure out what speedo gear i need and B) how to do it. I honestly am afraid to touch something that is so important buy everyone has said how easy it is. Thanks

Hi there!

This would be best posted under the Modified Explorers forum, but you don't need to repost. It will either be answered for you or moved to the correct forum. I'm curious to hear the answer too... Thanks for posting this question!

For some reason, the link to this picture from your previous email didn't work for me.

ok so i looked again, and this time i took another picture. This pic has what i thought it was before but now there is another item (the black thing) that i guess it also could be. I have no idea. What threw me off is that what i initially thought it was has 3 wires coming out of it. The black thing has 2 wires coming out of it and looks more like the pics of the vehicle speed sensor in the other pics? Can someone please let me know if im going crazy? Thanks

You are likely just feeling a difference because the truck has to work harder to turn the larger tires. My friend had 33s on his Explorer for a long time and never had a problem other than the speedometer being off.

I was going to replace the gear in my truck after getting 31s, but the other day I decided to test how far off the speedometer was with a hand held GPS unit. Both the speed reading and odometer reading were almost spot on with what the GPS unit said (off by no more than 1/10th of a mile). I'm happy with that. No new speedo gear for me.

thanks for the reply, i just changed my speedometer gear anyway, but it will still be off a little since my calculations equaled out to needing an 18.8 tooth gear . I took it for a quick ride today, but hopefully tomorrow i will get someone to keep pace with me and let me know how much im off by.
