Speedo Gear Part Number

Robert posted parts number for the speedo gears. My dilema is that I pulled a pink (19 tooth) gear out of my truck, but I have an automatic.

I would like to know from someone that has done this, what the correct part number is for an 18 tooth gear to go in an automatic. The one that I have is a 19 tooth, right hand twist gear.

Any help would be appreciated.

The table I got off the Ranger site is a little mis-leading in the application. You have to use the color from the table that your original one came from. In your case since yours is pink, you need the yellow one. The complete part for the yellow one is CODD-17271-B. I just bought a yellow one to replace my pink one (which replaced my black one) a couple of months ago when I put my 33s on. The price has gone up to a little over $10 now.

From what I have been able to determine, 4 wheel drives need to use the table from the "manual" list. The gear goes into the trannsfer case and since the transmission is the same between an automatic and manual Ford uses the same gears they use in the manual transmission. The table on the Ranger site should have said "Manual/all 4x4s" and "2WD automatics". I've edited mine to clear up the confusion.

The original one that I had is pink. I got the grey one and put it in my 4x4, as that is the only one that the dealer listed and had in stock. It seems to turn the gear properly. I don't know if it's correct yet, as I can't tell until I am able to drive on the highway. It seems to be showing a little fast though.

I'll have to see what happens with it. Any idea of the consequences of having the incorrect gear in, besides a speedometer that is off? The threads are the same twist, so that shouldn't hurt anything and it all fit in correctly. What are the differences between the two 18-tooth gears?

The length of the shaft on my original and the replacement were different (replacement was longer), but it still fit. The shape of the base was different, but all of the holes were the same size and the clip, clipped into place properly.

I don't know whether or not the longer gear will work properly or not. If it fits and turns properly then it should function the same as the 18 tooth shorter gear. I just remember when I took out my original 20 tooth black one, I asked for a 19 tooth tan gear since mine was an automatic. When I compared the length to my original one, I noticed that one was longer than the other so I had them bring out the 19 tooth pink one. The lengths matched up perfectly. If your grey one doesn't work, I doubt if Ford will let you return it but it's worth a try. Use the part number that I posted for the yellow one. It came right off the bag from mine. If your dealer doesn't have it in stock, they should be able to get it in a day or two at the most.

I only drove a short bit with the new gear, but it seemed to be working correctly. I'll try and speed test it today with my brother by pacing him. If the grey one seems to give me any trouble, I will trim the shaft on it to be the same as my pink gear.
