Ok so I just got a 91 explorer the Speedometer, milage, and trip don't work. The fuel gage don't work either. So does anyone have an idea on how to fix these problems???
The speedo is mechanical. The drive cable may have broken or come off the backside of the guages or the gear is missing/broken. Most likely with a fuel gauge not working, the sending unit in the tank is bad. You must drop the tank to fix this.
To check your speedo, pull the cable out of the back of the trans or t-case if yours is 4x4. Spin the gear counterclockwise with a drill and see if it registers on the gauge, should be around 30-40 mph. Have another person in the truck to validate it.
The sending unit is more difficult. It works on varying resistence. A change in voltage makes the needle react differently. As long as the wiring is intact at the back of the gauges and to the tank, then most likely its the unit in the tank. I recommend using a motorcraft replacment sending unit and fuel pump assembly, more cost but worth it in not having to do pull the tank twice.
Ok someone help please I am trying to remove my speedo cluster and I got all the cables loose except the actual speedo cable can someone tell me how that comes off???
