I have a 1993 Explorer 4.0 and my speedometer no longers works along with the cruise control. While driving about 60mph, all of a sudden my engine idle high, the rpm gauge as well and my speedometer drop to 0. It repeat that for a 1/4 mile and then the speedometer stayed at 0. After I pulled over, I did not notice any leakage but when I resumed driving, it took longer that usual for the transmission to shift and I notice my rpm gauge was a lot higher that usual. Now I burning more gas than usual. Any thoughts?

VSS, the computer needs the speedo signal to work properly.

Je5, Can I replace the VSS myself or what do I need to do? If VSS is the speed sensor, I replaced that all ready. Thanks.
