I want to put an amp in my truck, the amp draws 12 amps so I was wondering if I could strip a wire say going to the radio and run the amp off of it. I also have one 18-gauge wire going straight to the battery that the C.B. attached to can I use it as a power source or do I have to run another wire to the battery?

I would run a good fused 12 guage wire from the battery. Better to be safe.

I agree, maybe even go 10 gauge. Don't run it off a supply for anything else, give it its own power supply.

I would use a properly fused 10 g from the battery.

Thanks I will be installing it next week using a 12 amp fuse and 10 gauge wire if I can get it through the firewall. I really do appreciate your help on this so thanks again.

My amp uses fused 8 gauge Stinger wiring. Getting wires through the firewall is not difficult.

I would read the instructions that came with the amp to find out what size fuse you need to run. I don't think you are going to find a 12 amp fuse, just 10 and 15 amp fuses. My amp requires a 20 amp fuse, so I would check it out. If you don't have a manual, look for a sticker on the backside of the amp...it may say it there as well.

I'm sorry the owner said it draws 10 amps not 12 he was using a home power supply because was using it as part of his garage stereo .I bought it on e-bay it's a no name black amp. There is some writing on it that I can't read, and it looks like a sticker used to be on the bottom but was removed. It has 100 watt RMS stereo amplifier ingraved on it. So I really am lost, It was cheap enough but no instructions came from the previous owner at all. He just said it was working and that it would not be DOA, or I could return it for a refund minus shipping charges.

If only 100 watts (100/12=8.?), so a 10 amp fuse would be a good choice.

A good place to get through the firewall is to follow the hood relaese cable. Plenty of room for a wire or two.

Thanks for the guidance to run the wires Bill. I was looking around and really didn't see any free space, so that is a big help.
