2013 Explorer Sport - Black Locking Lugs

Hi All,

I got these black Gorilla locking lugs for Christmas. They really dress up the black sport wheels, so I thought I'd share.

These are the Gorilla Automotive 71683NBC Acorn Black Chrome Wheel Locks (1/2" Thread Size) - For 5 Lug Wheels - Link on Amazon

I do like those, always wondered, does the paint come off when torqueing them down? I only use lug wrench/torque wrench when removing/swapping wheels but sockets are never "gentle" on the lugs over time.

I did the same but used these instead (recommended by someone else on the forum) - half the price of the Gorilla ones.

you click on the Amazon link and if you put in the vehicle it says "NOT" for your vehicle . I wonder why it says that ?

I also checked out the site. It says they fit the 2011, 2012 models but not the 2013 and 2014 ones. I wonder what changed?

Did the paint chip when you put the socket on and tightened them?

My Gorilla ones did not. I was actually impressed, because I slid the wrench off once which I was sure would gouge it. Not a mark.

Nothing changed. Those are on my 2013 Sport and fit great.

I've got regular black lugs and it does make a nice difference. Eventually will upgrade to locking but they were free so can't complain! I have gorilla locking black lugs on my raptor, they're great quality. The splined locking lugs have more faces for the torque force to be applied so they're less likely to get chewed up than normal ones with only 6 sides.

No, there was no damage that I noticed, although I was being careful.

They're not the highest quality (the splined socket in particular) but seeing as this was a bit of an experiment I felt more inclined to spend $25 vs $50.

Im kinda thinking the same, my concern is when I go to the dealership for "The Work's" and they rotate the tires, Im pretty sure the tech isnt going to be as careful as we would.

I bought the ones the Cheat posted, they just arrived and Im a little concerned they are lighter, smaller, don't have same size chamfer where the lug nut contacts the rim chamfer. Might send them back.

I went with a set of McGard spline drive black lug nuts/locks. Haven't installed them yet (waiting on some nicer weather), so I can't speak to how they are compared to the OEM lug nuts (yet). Why McGard? Buddy of mine swears by them, and isn't a fan of the Gorilla brand (he ran into some rusting issues with a set, but that was many many years ago). When I get around to putting them on I'll take some comparison pictures.

They look pretty robust, but $211?

Mine were $26

I guess you get what you pay for.

If you can maybe pull a stock lug nut off and do some comparisons, they look smaller same as mine.

Here is a better shot of the 60 degree bevel that seats into the rim.

Just not sure theres enough bite.
