My 2003 explorer has an irritating squeaking sound that eminates from around the rear window--it's pretty hard to isolate--sounds like it's from all around the window. It sound like styrofoam squeaking against itself with every bump we hit.

Sorry if this has been covered before, but any ideas?

Sounds like maybe the weather stripping needs to be replaced; or what happens if you put Armorall on it?

armorall or wd40 works temporarilly on my dads blazer

is it possible it is coming from the liftgate? and not the rear window?

Ok I had a annoying squeak from the rear area...I even had someone in the 3rd row and they could not really find where it was coming from.

Then one day when putting groceries in through the rear window I leaned against the hatch and it squeaked!

I found that on each side of the main hatch there are spring loaded plastic "thingies"
I think they keep the hatch centered as it closes.
When the hatch closes they slide against a plastic part near the tail lights.

So I put WD40 on the plastic and let it sit, rubbed it in and wiped off excess.

Squeak gone!

Thanks, Curtis. I'll take your suggestion and let you know how it turns out.

Well, that didn't help. The search continues.

i have a similar squeak in my '91 ex.
when i changed the fuel pump i found a mouse nest on top of it.
i dunno if that was the cause of the squeak or not. lol

Well, I found it. I have aftermarket metal taillight 'brush guards' that fasten on with the same screws that the taillights are attached with. The small hatch on the tailgate was rubbing against this and causing the squeak. Sooo, this won't be of much help to most of you since you don't have that aftermarket part to cause the squeak in the first place, but for closure, I figured I'd mention it here. I put a thin layer of vaseline on it and the squeak is gone.
