My truck has 72K on it, bought 3 yrs ago with 39K. For a few months now when I shift from park to drive or to reverse it seems to get in to gear which alittle bit of a clunk and then squeak as soon as begin to let off the brake. I took a 100 mile trip this past weekend and I noticed at high highway speeds that the is significant vibration which feels like it is coming from the rear wheels. The rear passanger's side rotar seemed much warmer than the other rear rotar after this trip. The transmission is shifting just fine (changed last year, never changed diff fluid or transfercase fluid). I just got all new tires this year and the balance weights are still on the truck so that isnt it. I did a basic inspection to see if the rear wheel bearings were going bad but they seem fine. I also replaced all four shocks this year and front brake pads and discs. I changed the rear pads two year ago but not the discs. I think the rear passengers side disc is warped and since I am planning on doin that begining of next year I am going to do it now instead but i would like to know what else to look at or replace since I doubt this will solve the squeak when put in gear. Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

Clunk, squeaking and vibration are classic u-joint indicators. Usually can be replicated by changing gears from front to reverse for the clunk. Squeaking is at under 10mph. Vibration at higher speeds. I would suggest you pull the front and rear drive shafts. U-joints and the front prop shaft cv (usually just vibration and clicking, not clunking unless severe) should all pivot and turn smoothly with no hard spots or noise. Ujoints are not expensive and difficulty level is low with basic tools including a good sized hammer or you can rent/borrow a tool to swap them from Autozone.

Tire balance can change, even if the weights do not fly off. Doesn't happen often, but can and does happen. You say the R/R (?) brake rotor was warm? Could be the caliper hanging up a bit. Squeaks just as you let off brakes and start to roll? Sounds like brake pad squeal. Can be from the caliper hanging slightly. This is not to say the drivelines are not to blame, just some things that can happen that you seem to be dismissing.

thanks. i planned to inspect the brake pads and everything but i havent yet because my truck sat alot so I am planning on replacing the bolts for the caliper and bracket holding thepads in place.

Bolts maybe a good idea, but don't forget to lube the caliper slides. I use anti sieze from PermaTex. Messy, but good lube. IMHO

thanks. I am also going to try to get a new tire since one of them seems to already be falling apart and i just bought em this march. The face is wavy and looks like it might actually be causing the vibration.

After doing the rear barke pads and discs i noticed the pad and rotor were not wearing right and the rotor was way to rusted so the pad developed a groove shape and appeared to be rubbing which explains the heat coming off that disc after a long drive. A friend of mine is a mechanic and recomended replacing the parking brake hardware kit from napa and he replaced those. As for the vibrations at high speeds, I brought my truck to pep boys where I bought the tires and it turned out they all were off balance just a little and now the vibration appears to be gone. If it comes back I will move on to inspect the u joints. The front axle seals are also leaking so that will be done soon also.

the squeak and slight clunk when put in gear appears to be gone after replacing the brakes also.

highway speed vibration from tires

Ok so the squeak is definitely gone but now the vibrations are back they occur at highway speeds and after going this speed for long periods of time the vibrations get worse and from the rear wheels. So, it seems like once the tire heat up alot from alot of use at these speeds the vibrations show more and once they get this bad it begins to vibrate at any speed afterwards but remains worse around 60-70 mph. I am almost certaint is the tires, only oabout 4k on em and they are cheap definity h/t 60k tires. Shoulda just got michelins :(.
