ok i know its not the PS pump or anything like that. this is coming from the front end itself when im turning my wheels. i have no idea what it is, and its not the hub seals either. this is a whole new breed of squeal.

CVs?

Does it squeek when going over bumps?

Was a possible cause to this noise ever determined? My car is doing the same thing. I just had the power steering pump flushed, but 3 months later I am hearing squealing/clunking noises [from the steering column] when making turns and a squeaking noise has just developed when I go over bumpy roads, speed bumps, but this noise seems to be coming from the left side, not really from the front. The repair shop said the pump needed to be replaced, but it was flushed and refilled instead, could this be sufficient to solving the pump problem?

hint

Sometimes when I turn to the locks (espically to the right) I hear funny / squeaky noises. When I am turned to or nearly to the lock and I go over a bump (like backing over a curb or rock) it makes this horrible squeaky grindy noise.
Is this something expensive like CVs, or is it cheap, or something to just let be and ignore?

this actually sound like the same thing my moms 96 X is experiencing... anyone have any ideas as t owhat it is?

i made a sharp left turn into a drainage type ditch in a parking lot, and it made a horrible clunk, like my radius arm clunk, and also when turned all the way and going forward, it makes a ticking sound that you can feel through the steering wheel, i looked at the cvs and boots, and they appears to be ok......

cv boot

its ur cv boot---check the rubber boot that goes from the front cv axel to the wheel hub if the boot is moveable then you lost all the grease that is supposed to be in there which in return makes the squeeling noise or the chunking noise when making sharp turns-- if not fixed this will cause the whole cv axel and boot to be replaced and can be costly!!!!!!!!

Please describe this more in depth...
how do you fix it? ;) Thanks!

Yeah.. mine had a small hole in it when I bought it. "I'll replace it soon" I thought. Well, 6 months later the CV left town. Was only $70 though. Don't consider that too costly.

YEa but it matters what you think is costly!!! if you did a torsion bar twist above 1.75 in. it could put premature ware to the cv axel--------if u are trying to replace it urself its not really worth it especially if 4wd--- new cv axel and boot 80$ labor 150$ so it would run ya about 230$ at a shop

by the way im new to this website so im not clear of how to put pics of truck up to look at

Y'all ever figure out if this was the problem? My truck makes a God awful squealing, like something metalic is rubbing on the rotor at low speeds. Its so shrill and high pitched that its almost unbearable. I hope its not something checking out

squeek

Hey all, I am not to sure about the folks with the constant squeal however, I may have the answer to the squeaks and clunks that was posted earlier.

My 94 X made some of the worst squeaks that I had ever heard. They seemed to get worse over bumps and when I was stopping. I also had a very VERY bad grinding feeling in the steering wheel. Especially at speed. It almost sounded, or felt, like I had a bust belt in a tire. The clunks?? God just pulling into the driveway was bad. I actually thought it was a ball joint bad or something.

Well a buddy and I were standing in the driveway discussing the problem when he noticed a shot radius arm bushing. I started the truck and started turning the wheel and low and behold we had the problem. I had almost 2 inches of travel in the radius arm on the right side.

We changed out both side the weekend and OH MY GOD!!!!!!! I have a new truck!!! You would not believe the difference!

If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me I can send pictures of what I talking about.

Have a great day!

Hello all,

I have a 98 XLT AWD. When making turns or going slowly over bumps, this truck makes a kind of groaning sound. Also, when I'm going over bumps at high speeds, I damn near get thrown out of the cab and lost almost total momentary control of the steering. I have the top of the line warranty and everytime I take it to the Ford people, they claim to have fixed this and tightened that and oiled this, etc. I'm getting to the point where I think driving is dangerous unless whatever this is is diagnosed and repaired. It's also getting extremley difficult to steer this truck. Help me, PLEASE!!

Groaning would be your ball Joints. Carquest sells Moog balljoints for replacements that you can grease in the future instead of replacing, you may want to look into those.

How dangerous is it to continue to drive it this way? I don't want a wheel coming off. As far as the bumps, I bought new shocks for that and I hope to have them installed this weekend. In the meantime, what can check for to make sure it's the ball joints and nothing else?
