XLT -91. The car has been standing still outside for two or three years until this summer. When we started it again it ran good for a few minutes then came a small burst of smoke and a loud squealing (almost metallic) sound started. After a few minutes the "check engine"-light lights up... It sounds like it comes from the area of the alternator, I'm pretty sure it's not the drivebelt. Any ideas? I really need this car again on the farm, we are getting more horses and the Ford is all I have to tow with... Have changed waterpump, thermostat, heater core, plugs and wires, fixed the 4X4, etc so I can fix most things as long as I know what the problem is... :) Thankful for your help!

first thing i would have done is replaced all the fluids and greased everything...check and replace all vaccum hoses, belts, check all spinning parts, pull wheels and service and check all, all new filters etc, before i even attempted to start it....i have an extensive background with horses and trailering, and one of the last things i would do is count on hauling livestock from point a to point b in a vehicle which has sat for years....even after i did as i mentioned i would still get some miles under it to see if any other problems show up before i was stuck somewhere with livestock to care for...good luck...;)

oil pump, timing chain.?fuel filter, fpr.(fuel pressure regulaor).spark plugs and wires and coil? o2 sensor?

he did say he replaced plugs and wires though...

sounds like the old liquids sized up the engine, i agree i would have changed all that stuff first prior to cranking it.

You cant sit and be lazy for 3 years, then just get up and run a marathon, you will keel over and pass out after a few minutes. :)

my altenator partially locked up once and made a screaming loud sound and a nasty smell, (from the belt not turning properly) changed it, and it was fine you may want to check that out.

forgot to mention a new altenator for these can be pricey, I put in a used one for less than half the price just to see if that was the problem, Im not saying to buy used parts but it worked for me.

The sound is gone! Took of the belt and turned alternator, idler etc by hand. Found where the sound came from, and some cleaning and lubrication solved the problem! Thanks for your help!

I think the problem is the alternator issue.Good quality Ford parts may be a better idea than used ones.I think they would not sell their stuff if it still makes good use for them.

Right, new Ford is best, I was just mentioning the price, for some reason, this altenator is pricey for a domestic vechicle. I was quoted $185 and that was for an aftermarket reman. The junkyard dog was $35 5x less
