My 91 Explorer has developed a squeeking noise and is driving me crazy. Its coming from one of the pulleys or the belt. I changed the idle and tensioner pulley and that didnt help much. Then I put my spare alternator on and that helped alot but I still have a noise. I got some wd 40 on the pulley surface and that quited it down for a few minutes. Where do I go from here. I was going to get a used belt to try it out as I work at a Pick-N-Pull. But I noticed the setup on the tensioner and the idler are different on the 91 and 93, 94 models. Is that a better set up and is the belt the same length as the 91.
Thanks for any help you give me,
Deron

The 93-94 models should have the updated tensioner design. The updated tensioner was due to a recall, due to the flimsy design of the 91-92 tensioner, some actually broke.

I'd suggest putting the 93-94 tensioner on yours, and getting a new serpentine belt. If you can find a good condition one on a salvage Explorer, that would work too, but I think the higher quality belts are worth the money compared to the cheap ones most people put on their vehicles, that don't last all that long.

If the squeak still doesn't go away, it could be from the idler pulley bearing. Get the idler pully from the same vehicle you got the tensioner from and replace it, or get a new bearing for it from the hardware store.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply and info. The 93 - 94 does look like a better design.I did not know the bearing could be changed. Does it have to be pressed out and does anyone know of any bearing p/n that will work. Going out side now to put my newer 130 amp back on and taking the old but steady 94 off.

I had a squeak on my '93. Changed the belt for a Gates and 3+ years no squeak.

No idea on the bearing P/N, but you can get them at the auto parts store or some decent hardware stores. The pulley is the same for the idler and the newer tensioner, so you could also swap those or use the idler from another Explorer as well.

You can just bang out the bearing and bang in the new one, just be careful and use wood or a plastic rod or something, not a piece of hard metal, so you don't damage the bearing or seal. Using the old bearing as an in-between piece when installing puts the impact on the side of the bearing shell and prevents damage to the new bearing.

i think the 93-94 pulleys need the bracket that bolts to the head in order to work. my exploder has the older style and my ranger has the newer style and those brackets looked different to me..

so uhh, picknpull you say?? explorerforum 50% off coupon? haha. im in there almost everyweekend.
