Ok so here;s the story. My explorer left me sit, would turn over but would not start. Had it towed to a Garage and was told the fuel pump was dead. They claim they installed a new pump. But now when i come down a steep incline and my gas guage goes below a 1/4 reading the truck stall's. My gas guage has always flucuated since i owned the truck, But I could drive it when it was reading near empty and this never happened. Any thoughts on this? Thank's Tim

Are you familiar with how far you can travel on a tank of fuel? The arm on your fuel gauge sending unit may have been bent during installation. Easiest way to check would be to fill up and go for a drive. Might not hurt to take a jerry can with you for back up. Just in case...

Probably not a gauge issue, since the truck actually stalls. These vehicle are notable for sometimes having fuel delivery issues when under 1/4 tank and pointed downhill. Fuel pickup on new pump is probably a little higher than old one, resulting in your problem. Either take it back and get shop to correct it, or keep more fuel in your tank.

With regard to my experience, I discovered that the fuel pump does not sit low enough in the tank and, not only that, but the way it is positioned pushes the strainer right up against the side of the tank. It gets even worse when you replace the OEM pump with an aftermarket version.

The solution is to lower the fuel pump and to slightly adjust the direction of the pump and strainer so that it points more toward the front of the vehicle rather than into the side of the gas tank. To accomplish this, I had to remove the fuel pump assembly and cut the end of the fuel pump mount off of the bracket. I installed it back on the bracket approximately 5/8" lower with a metal worm gear clamp and then also re-positioned it so that the strainer is oriented toward the front of the tank.

The result is that now I no longer have issues with my Mountaineer stalling at 1/4 tank or even less. I can now crank it with barely any gas in it at all on level ground or an incline. It does not stall or stutter.

Thank's for the info. They must have put in an aftermarket like mlochala say,s. When the old pump was in it never did this. I could let my guage to almost E and it would not stall. Now at a 1/4 tank reading it stall's on downhill incline's.

They may have installed the wrong pump. there are 2 pumps. One with a flat bottom for the larger 21 gallon Tank, and a angled shorter one for the slightly smaller tank. My 96' Eddie Bauer 4 door had the 21 Gallon tank so it needed the longer flat bottomed one. Although like stated above with the truck pointing downhill, with a 1/4 tank of gas it can stall, Ford I believe had a TSB about it.

EDIT: Also as I found out with mine that the region also makes a difference. There is a US, Mexico, Canadian ones they all seemed to be different, or at least that is what everybody told me. I got a replacement US one from Delphi.
