stalling

I have had my '91 Explorer since the middle of summer and i have had to replace many things on it. Now, when i start it it goes fine but as soon as I stop all the way it stalls and the engine turns off. I have to start it a few times and give it gas for awhile before it will move again.

It started a few days ago. At first it would just coast for a little while and then it would start to go but kind of jerky.

Then it would stall and i would have to restart the car a few times then it would go.

Now today it stalled at a stop sign and i had to restart it a few times and then i had to put it in drive while i was holding down the gas but then it was really jerky.

Welcome to the site! It kinda sounds like your IAC. Are your RPMS pretty erratic? Does it seem to die because the rpms goes to 0?

yeah that could be it.

My friend said it could be the idle. we are going to change the spark plugs and wires in alittle while.

It's hard to tell from your description, but I'm going to ask this anyway. Does it seem to stall the way a manual transmission would stall at a stop if you don't push on the clutch? Your last sentence makes me think of a stuck torque converter lockup clutch. It's uncommon but not unheard of.

yeah it is kind of like when you stall in a manual. It does it mostly when it is cold.

Idle Re-learn Procedures

1) Turn off all accessories & disconnect the battery for 5 minutes.

2) Reconnect battery. Disconnect the Idle Speed Control (ISC) solenoid located just behind the throttle body on the drivers side of the upper intake plenum.

3) With the truck in NEUTRAL, run the engine at 2500 rpm for 30 seconds.

4) Let the engine idle for 2 minutes.

5) Put the truck in PARK (or NEUTRAL if manual trans.) and adjust the idle speed stop screw until the idle is at 700rpm.

6) Turn engine off and let sit for 2 minutes then repeat steps 1-5 once.

7) Disconnect battery for 5 minutes then reconnect.

8) Reconnect the Idle Speed Control (ISC) solenoid.

9) Run the engine at idle for 2 minutes.

10) Quickly depress the accelerator pedal to the floor and release it immediately, allowing the engine to return to idle.

11) Lightly depress and release the accelerator allowing the engine to return to idle.

After carefully following the above steps, the engine should now have reset its base idle to factory specifications. The idle should now be smooth and at approximately 700rpm at operating temperature. If this procedure does not correct the fast idle condition, carefully check for vacuum leaks at the throttle body flange gasket and at the intake snorkel to throttle body interface. If no vacuum leaks are detected and the condition still exists, a condition that is unrelated to the mechanical throttle body assembly exists and must be diagnosed and repaired.


If this does not work try a new IAC also do you have a check engine light

no the check engine light doesnt come on. we replaced all the spark plugs and cables and it didnt stall so im hoping that was the problem.

I had the same problem, after cleaning the IAC and new plugs/wires I still had the problem. It would stall for no reason, wether I was doing 80 or sitting at a traffic light.
I finally swallowed some pride and took it to Ford for a diagnostic test. It ended up being the "power" and "fuel pump" relays, they were sticking.... Anyways it's fixed now!

yeah it is still not working. Next we are going to replace the gas filter. Lately i have been driving my moms Rodeo and i miss my explorer. so hopefully it will be fix in the next couple of days.

Its probably the IAC...
