Which engine?

At idle or when at 2k rpm and take foot off gas?

V8, have to press on gas to get started but as soon as you let back to idle it dies. Same as when driving, keep engine revved and it goes but as soon as you take foot off gas pedal it dies.

Have you done anything to it recently? Even as much as disconnecting the battery.

New to this vehicle so not familiar with all the acronyms. what's IAC? As my screen name says I have old Plymouths.

It stands for Idle Air Control.

It adjusts the amount of air the engine gets, at idle.

Some individuals have had to use OE. I don't know if it's because they were buying a secondary or value line product.

Need to check your vehicles production code.

Another issue is the rubber boot at the front of the TB. Coming from the PCV? It may look fine, but it tears/cracks and causes havoc.

I agree with number4. IAC. I've also had a torn rubber elbow at IAC and didn't know it was torn on underside until I removed it. If this is the case u need to get replacement from ford as making an elbow from a rubber hose won't hold up to the heat. Tried that before.

OK, update time. My son brought the tuck over and said every time he took foot off gas engine would die. he had to drive and constantly put truck into neutral to make the trip. I purchased the Idle Air control valve 216648 and it was wrong (solenoid was too long and was pressing up against vacuum lines) went to NAPA and we were able to get correct part 229697 (these parts look identical except for the length of the solenoid and application is the same for both). After putting part on went for test drive and all was fine at first but then when we would come to a complete stop the engine would start dieseling between 500-1000 rpms and then die. Wouldn't happen on every stop but frequently enough to know something was still amiss. Son said it was better than before but we still had a problem. I bought a Throttle Position Sensor and installed that and checked all rubber boots and hoses for cracks and found none. Son drove truck home and said it only stalled once on the first stop sign he came to but no more problems. Daughter in law drove it to work today and said no problems so hopefully it's fixed but will let everyone know of any updates. Thanks to all for all help and insight. Can't seem to post picture of the 2 AIC's side by side to show difference, if anyone wants to help on picture post I can email picture.

The 4.6l's are notorious for crudding up the throttle body. There's actually a TSB from Ford acknowledging this issue within as little as 10,000 miles!

Buy a TB gasket and some Throttle Body cleaner (not carb clean.)

Takes maybe 1/2 hour, taking your time.

Once you've done the TB cleaning and I'd highly recommend it, then reset the PCM. Even if you don't remove and clean the TB, still do the PCM reset.

Follow all the steps in the PCM reset process.
