starting issue

i have just replaced the motor on my 1998 explorer limited with a 5.0 i can start it if i jump the starter with a hot wire from the battery but it will not start with the key.

I'm not an expert but let's throw something out there . . .

Does the engine actually start and run when you hot wire it from the battery or does it just turn the engine?

I'm guessing something related to the PATS system might be confused due to your engine swap.
