I did a search without much luck so here goes:
just recently my truck started NOT starting right up on first crank. Ever since I had the truck it fired up right away on the first crank..even when really cold out. NOW it takes a second try and sometimes a third (and turning the key to start for maybe 5 count.) Most times now when it doesn't start up right away, the next time I cycle the key to "start" it starts up right away.

I am at 175,000kms with as far as I can tell the original starter, alternator and original battery replaced 6 months ago....

It doubt its the battery (new)...I don't think it's the alternator so I am guessing maybe the starter? any ideas?
thanks,

Thats a few miles, so its probably time to do the maintenance items if you have not done them:

1. Clean your MAF. search this site for instructions>
2. Clean your idle air control valve. Again, search this site for instructions.
3. Change your fuel filter if you have not done so recently.
4. Put in a new set of plugs if you have not done so recently. Mark the old ones so you know what cylinder each one came out of and inspect them carefully. They should all have very light tan to white insulators and be clean with very little deposits. If one of them has a lot of deposits on it, you could have a bad fuel injector.

Once you have done the above, if you still have starting issue, then you can start looking for a problem. From what you are describing the tune up stuff should be addressed first.

Good luck!

Thanks...will do so when I get some time...this weekend.
cheers,

If you are going to do the plugs, I suggest doing the wires as well, unless they have already been replaced.

From what you are saying, I will have to assume that your starter is turning each time you cycle the key, so the starter itself is NOT the issue. Therefore, the things that prevent the engine from firing are air, spark, fuel. Check your air filter and tap the filter element to knock out any heavy debris if it is not clean. Next, check for spark. Lastly, ensure that your fuel pump runs when you turn the key the first time. If it does not, swap the fuel pump relay for another in the powerblock and try again, and of it starts immediately, then replace the relay ASAP.

One advantage to a delayed start is that oil can move around before it runs. I wish mine did delay for a few seconds. As it is said (even by those click and clack guys), most engine damage is done at start-up due to oil not getting up from the pan to all those vital areas.
