I've been searching the forums for about an hour and I haven't come across this problem...

I have a '00 SOHC 4.0 that starts, but you need to keep your foot on the gas to get the engine to stay on. The car dies at idle. I tried spraying the IAC valve with no improvement. When I get the car to run I hear a hissing noise from the top of the engine but I'm not sure if that's always been there. Any ideas for what I should check next? I changed the fuel filter about 2 months ago, and I'd be surprised if it was a fuel pressure/fuel pump issue because the car runs if I hold my foot on the gas. Maybe a hose somewhere? Thanks in advance for your help!

On my old 1991 ex the vaccum line hose kept slipping off and that caused sputtering, rough idle, adn then eventually died. check those hoses maybe.

Cleaning the IAC does not always work. Mine had similar symtoms and after cleaning the IAC didn't work I ended up replacing it....problem solved! You may first want to try cleaning your MAF sensor (Use MAF cleaner!!!).

Thanks...it ended up being a rotted out vacuum hose connector once I took everything apart.
