A few month's ago I was having a problem with my 91 explorer's amp gauge jumping around and the power windows acting up. I had the battery and charging system checked and the battery only had 3 amps. I thought it just might be a ground wire since I noticed that it was very corroded and cracked out. After changing this the gauge was steady but the windows still acted up. Now it is taking quite a while to start and today it clicked (solenoid?) the first couple of times I tried and then finally took about 10 seconds of cranking to start. Could this just be my battery? I also noticed a crack or two in the positive cable that rons into the fuse box under the hood. Oh yeah, and when I changed the ground, I didn't think it bolting right next to the exhaust was a good idea so I got a shorter cable and bolted it at the bolt that holds on the alternator. Please help.

Check to make sure that your battery cables are not corroded. This is a common problem especially with 1st gen Explorers. The cables can look okay from the outside but be badly corroded under the insulation.

I had the same problem it sounds like. It was nothing more than corroded cables. I'd start there.
