I have a 99' ford explorer with a 5.0l... I have done a full tune and post what up below what I replaced so far.. But my troubles are the the motors turns but it has a hard time starting up and starter has to turn the motor for extended times in order for the motor to start up... This does not always happen all the time and I am lost on what it is ???? Oh I get no error codes and I have pulled the vacuum hose off the fuel pressure regulator but no fuel comes out ...

Parts replaced -
Spark plugs (Motorcraft)
fuel filter
Spark plug wires
pvc valve
Battery
oil and filter
air filter
water pump
Radiator
thermostat

Thanks
Jay

Does it run well once you get it running?

I wonder what your fuel pressure is...

And, are you getting a nice fat spark when cranking?

It starts up and runs but takes a extended amount of time to start up... This does not happen all the time..
I was going to rent a fuel pressure gauge and check the fuel pressure and work from there..

I check the fuel pressure to see if anything comes out but nothing came out and it seemed when I pulled the vacuum hose off it ran smoother ??? This also does hot or cold and its completely random and has been happening more and more lately...

I wasn't really wondering about the pressure regulator, more the pump. If your pressure numbers are good I would check the coil resistance.

How do I check that ???? Oh has anyone had any experience with buying fuel pump off ebay for cheap and what is the right part number for my fuel pump???

Check which one? Borrow a pressure gauge and attach it to the fuel rail to check your pressure numbers. Why you jumping to buying a fuel pump without troubleshooting your problem first?

I' am not jumping to buying a fuel pump but asking for help if anyone has experience with a fuel pump from ebay ???? I just have go to advance and use borrow program from them and will post up the results...

It's all good ....
I am almost sure it's the fuel pump because when I bought the truck it had 150,000 miles and everything was oem and when I changed the fuel filter it came out looking like coke a cola coming all out.... Now it's doing it all the time now and I guess it's getting worse and something has to get done but I work all day and don't have time to do anything.

OK
I check the primary's on the coil packs and got an ohm's reading of .7 ohm on the coils ..But I can't figure out how to check the secondary coils ????

could try doing a search dude, do you know the values your coil should have?

could try doing a search dude, do you know the values your coil should have?

Well my primary have to be with in 03 to 1.0 ohm....I didn't have a chance to look it up but I was just reading the repair book and how they were telling me to do it , I could never get it to work at all..

Aha, found the old Haynes manual...

To check the primary resistance of the ignition coil, connect one probe to the positive terminal (center one) then the other to the left and then the right terminals, each being a primary. The resistance should be the same for both.

Check the coil secondary resistance by probing the paired companion cylinders, 1&6, 5&3, 4&7, 2&8 on the V8.

Primary should be .3 - 1 ohm
Secondary should be 6.5 to 11.5 K ohm

Well I check the coil packs and the reading I got was 14.3k-14.4 k ohm.. Would this make my truck hard to start because of the coil packs being not in specifications???

How often does your Explorer stare at you?

Not sure dude, all I can tell you is what I read in the manual and that I have never had to change a coil in any vehicle I have ever owned. Well, once in an old Grand Am I got out of the wrecking yard and made my wife drive for 3 years... ha ha ha. That was a while ago.

The truck starts everytime but you just have to hold key down till it starts and when I bought it the plugs where the oem plugs and fine wire was burned until it was almost gone because it had 150.000 miles on the stock plugs..

I guess, if you had a really high reading, or your readings varied greatly I would think you had a problem. In this case my guess is your coil is OK.

I would still check the fuel pressure.
