Starting Problems

Ok I just checked the fuel pressure and I get a 60psi but after that the pressure begins to fall till it hits 0 psi..So what does that mean???

When the key is first switched to the on position, if you listen real closely you will hear an electric motor near the gas fill area. This is the priming cyle of the fuel pump. You might need a quiet area to hear this

Next few times you go to start the truck, try this:

Switch the key on and off 4 times, on the 4th time move the key further to the starting position. I want to know if doing this will make the truck fire right up every time you try it.

I tried and it does work sometimes but the pressure drops as soon as the pump turns off ...

OK, either an injector is leaking down the prssure, or your fuel pump is. I would bet on the fuel pump assembly.

Your 99 uses a return less fuel system, the regulator is actually in the tank, being part of the fuel pump "basket". The device you referred to in the fuel rails is a fuel pulse damper.

I'd stay away from cheap ebay replacements, unless it is a motorcraft brand.

Well I just had my dad watch the fuel pressure gauge as I was starting the truck and I got 60psi before the truck even started and the truck continued to hold that pressure and still the truck took a long time to start even having 60psi.... I redid the test again and the pressure held around 34psi after 5min, so I don't know if something wasn't tight enough or what ... My guess at this point is the coil packs which are 4k ohm out of spec...

If his pressure is dropping from 60psi to 34psi... Wouldn't that be a check valve in the fuel pump assembly not keeping pressure?

Also... if it's taking a long time to crank, could his cam/crank position sensor be faulty? Not knowing where the engine is and just kinda firing randomly until it catches and the coilpacks take over?? Just a thought...

Well the problem is that everything is within spec except the coil packs (4k ohm over spec) and the fuel pressure bothers me but when I did second everything came out perfect... I tried pinching the fuel pressure line in order to separate the fuel pump and regulator from the equation on the whether the injector wore bad or fuel pump and I tried using a pair of vise grips and tried pinching the line but the pressure still dropped and not sure if the pressure gauge sealed correctly or the vise grips created a good enough seal in order to stop the pressure from back feeding into the tank but I turned the pump on and the pressure built up meaning the line was not fulling sealed ... So basically I want to re pinch the line and make sure I have a good seal and test again and see what happens ??? Also I have no error codes indicating anything is wrong except for the hard staring...

Ok I just my chilton manual back from work and it saying that I need to replace pump and or regulator...So I am at a loss on how to tell a fuel pump the right way ???
Oh does anyone know where I can get a pressure regulator from instead of buying the whole unit which I don't have the money for ???

Before you go crazy buying parts, here a few things to check. First, the fuel pump relay, could be getting old and not getting a good connection, second the Shut off switch for the fuel, it is on the passenger side floor, on the firewall. Mine was actually unplugged because of one of my friends foot kicked it off. Your may be slightly disconnected. I believe the fuel lines should always have pressure regardless whether or not the vehicle is running. I remember reading that on all data or something. hope any of this helps.

My Mountianeer was having problem starting, and it turned out to be the MAF sensor.

After 3 different people (two of them professional mechanics) told me it was the Fuel Pump. (I was getting low fuel rail pressure error codes) I had the pump replaced, and it didn't fix the problem or the codes.

I began troubleshooting the sensors and read (somewhere) if you unplug the MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor) the car (a honda I believe) would run better if the MAF was bad. I tried it, and it worked the engine ran much better! I then cleaned (and then replaced) the MAF sensor, now it starts and runs fine with no codes (so far). I also cleaned and replaced the IAC but I doubt that the original was bad.

My suggestion would be to unplug the MAF, and see if it improves, and then go from there. However, keep in mind, I am not a mechanic. I am just telling you what worked for me even though it does not entirely make sense for the MAF to give low fuel rail pressure.

I check the fuel pump a couple times and I got 60 psi instantly with the ignition on,but as soon as the pump stop priming the pressure goes down.. Chilton's manual says that if the pressure drops more than 2 psi within 3min than the check valve is shot and my drops more than that...So I guess the fuel pump is shot and and the pressure regulator... I can't afford to buy the whole sending unit..

Fuel pump-
I can't afford to buy motorcraft pump so what other company should I go with ???

Fuel pressure regulator-
Where can I get that doesn't say it on the fuel rail ????? (I tired but can't find one or even a part number)

Anyone every use a SPECTRA PREMIUM Part # SP2296H before or get something better and I looking off rock auto parts...

That Spectra pump is made in China, if that bothers you. It does me and I'm reluctant to go through the hassle of replacing mine with a Chinese one, especially when my gut tells me my problem is not the fuel pump. But that’s another thread.

Well I fixed the problem and it was the fuel pump and I wound up buying a carter fuel pump because I heard good things about them and I got it for $205 from a local supply store instead of buy online....
I am going to do a full right up later on how to check almost with your fuel system because I had one hell of a time finding info on here with some many damn stickys..

Where was your Carter pump made? If its not China, that's what I want.

That's great dude. Glad you are up and running strong again.

Mine is doing the same thing, and the fuel pressure also drops quickly to about 30. Not really looking forward to changing the fuel pump. :(

It's not bad if you have an extra set of hands to help balance the tank when taking it down/putting it up. Just be very careful of static electricity!
