Hello, I tried a search for this topic but didn't find any relation to my problem. I have a 2000 Explorer XLT V6 4 door. There is metal on metal sound/rattle coming from the steering column area. It only occurs when I turn the wheel left or right, and a very slight turn at that. It also only occurs at 45mph and higher. I took the plastic coverings off from behind the wheel and also the plastic and metal covers from below the dash (the pieces that hide the steering column going to the firewall). I check all screws and bolts and everything seems tight. I am at a loss now. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!
Joe

Does anyone have or had this same type of issue?

It may be your clockspring. Are you sure it's in the column, and not where the wheel connects with the column? Does it do it when the truck is lifted on jackstands (i.e. no resistance on the Power Steering)? Check that out.

It does sound like it's coming from that area (where the steering wheel connects). Unfortunately, I do not have the resources to jack it up, but like I said, it only happens when I reach approx. 45 mph and higher and when I turn the wheel just slightly to the left or right of center. I'm assuming its the vibration from that speed that triggers it. Let me know if there is anything I can check myself.

Thanks

Don't have the RESOURCES? The Explorer CAME with a jack in it! Jack up that front end and check it out before it falls apart or something!

The noise doesn't occur at standstill, so jacking it up won't help. After a bit more research, I found this website (http://www.carcomplaints.com/Ford/Explorer/2002/investigations.shtml) and it seems to be the exact problem I am having. There are no recalls on this issue though. My passenger side warning light does come on, usually when the seat is moved or when someone sits in back and kicks the seat. Usually unplugging the connector under the pax side seat will fix it (as described on other forums on this site). Any suggestions? Is a clockspring is to replace or does it involve too much.

Thanks
